The Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly planning a PSL Sixes tournament inspired by the Hong Kong Sixes format.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering launching a new six-a-side tournament called PSL Sixes, inspired by the Hong Kong Sixes. The proposed competition aims to expand the reach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and attract more cricket fans. The tournament could also give young players a chance to showcase their talent.

According to reports, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has discussed the idea of launching PSL Sixes. The tournament is expected to take place during the PSL off-season, giving fans another competition to follow outside the regular T20 league schedule. The plan is still under consideration, and further details about the tournament are awaited.

PSL chief executive Salman Naseer also spoke about the proposed tournament during a podcast with former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram. The competition is expected to follow a franchise-based format, with teams representing different cities and regions across Pakistan. Pakistan has won the Hong Kong Sixes six times, including the 2025 edition.

PCB plans a PSL Sixes tournament modelled on Hong Kong Sixes

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering a new six-a-side tournament inspired by the Hong Kong Sixes. PSL chief executive Salman Naseer shared the proposal during a podcast, explaining that the board is exploring a shorter format focused on fast-paced and entertaining matches. The tournament could also bring cricket to smaller venues that have not hosted Pakistan Super League games.

Unlike a regular T20 competition, the proposed tournament would feature six-a-side cricket to offer a different experience for players and fans. Naseer said the plan is still under consideration and has not been finalised. The PCB is also exploring whether the event could become a regular part of its cricket calendar.

The proposed tournament could help the PCB reach fans in smaller cities and expand its cricket activities beyond the PSL. However, the board has not confirmed the launch date, participating teams, venues or competition format. Further details are expected once the PCB makes a final decision on the proposal.

What the report says about the format, teams and timeline of PSL Sixes

The Hong Kong Sixes offers a useful comparison for the proposed PSL Sixes tournament. The Hong Kong competition features international teams playing a fast-paced six-a-side format. Pakistan have won the title six times since the tournament began in 1992 and are the defending champions ahead of the next edition, scheduled for October 31 and November 1.

Unlike the Hong Kong Sixes, the proposed PSL Sixes tournament is expected to follow a franchise-based format similar to the Pakistan Super League. Teams could represent different cities or regions across Pakistan. However, the PCB has not confirmed the final format, participating teams or launch date. The proposal is still under consideration, and further details are awaited.

The proposed tournament could give the PCB another way to promote cricket during the PSL off-season and reach fans in smaller cities. If approved, it could also provide more opportunities for young players to showcase their talent. For now, the next step depends on the PCB's decision on the tournament's format, schedule and venues.

What PSL Sixes could mean for the PSL, players and fans

The proposed PSL Sixes tournament could help the Pakistan Super League reach more fans and expand its presence beyond the main T20 competition. A shorter, six-a-side format could offer fast-paced matches and more entertainment for spectators. If the plan moves forward, it could also give the PCB another way to keep fans engaged during the PSL off-season.

The tournament could also create opportunities for young and emerging players to showcase their skills. A shorter format would test their batting, bowling and fielding abilities under pressure. However, the PCB has not confirmed the teams or competition structure, so the opportunities for players will depend on the final plans.

For fans, PSL Sixes could bring cricket to smaller cities and venues that do not regularly host PSL matches. This could help more people watch live cricket and support their local teams. However, the tournament is still under consideration, and details such as the schedule, venues and participating teams are yet to be announced.
