Rohit Sharma on emotional Kohli hug after T20 WC 2024 win

The World Cup-winning captain of the Indian side, Rohit Sharma, has reflected on the emotional hug with Virat Kohli after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 when they beat South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. That moment went viral in minutes after the end of the final.

Both Virat Kohli and Rohit announced their retirements from the T20Is after the end of the final. They decided to give room to the upcoming generations of the blue brigade to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which they eventually went on to win at home under Suryakumar Yadav.

Rohit Sharma opened up on the raw, unscripted emotions behind his viral embrace

Rohit revealed how they all had been chasing the World Cup since 2015. Despite coming close so many times, they were not able to win titles. And once it finally happened in 2024, they were not able to react to the situation, and the emotional hug was just a reflection of the situation.

“We were running behind that World Cup from 2015 to 2024. We came close on so many occasions, but we were not able to win that title. We came close in 2015 and 2019, and I don’t even want to recall 2023. I just want to erase November 19 from my life. But after that, we had six months. And I knew that the 2024 T20 World Cup would be my last.” Rohit expressed this during his show on SonyLIV.

“I and Virat had discussions that we won’t play T20Is after that World Cup. So, that was the reflection of that emotion. Because we tried so hard for that trophy, and finally, when we got the title, we didn’t actually know how to react. Whatever was happening before us was just a reaction of all.” The Indian star addressed.

How India won the T20 World Cup 2024 to end ICC trophy drought

India batted first in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 against the Proteas and posted a decent score of 176 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to the superb 72-run partnership between Axar Patel and Kohli, who drilled a fine knock of 76 runs off 59 balls at a strike rate of 128.81.

Shivam Dube also contributed 27 runs off 16 balls, thanks to his three boundaries and one six. The Proteas kept losing wickets at regular intervals before Heinrich Klaasen played a superb knock of 52 runs off 27 balls.

Hardik Pandya bowled a superb last over, but SKY’s catch to dismiss David Miller remains one of the favourite moments for every Indian fan. They restricted the opposition to 169/8 and won the clash by just 7 runs.
