Earlier this month, reports emerged suggesting the possible exclusion of Virat Kohli from the T20 World Cup, sending shockwaves throughout the cricket fraternity. Amidst the uncertainty, various voices have weighed in, adding to the speculation surrounding Kohli’s role in the Indian team for the upcoming tournament.

The Telegraph Report

According to a report by The Telegraph, Virat Kohli’s place in the T20 World Cup squad is in doubt due to the emergence of power hitters within the Indian team. The report suggests that Kohli needs to deliver strong performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to solidify his spot in the marquee global tournament scheduled in the USA and the West Indies in June.

Kirti Azad’s Remark

Former World Cup winner and cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad made a strong statement regarding Kohli’s inclusion. Azad, via his official social media account, implied that captain Rohit Sharma is adamant about having Kohli in the side at any cost. He hinted at an official confirmation regarding Kohli’s presence in the final 15 for the World Cup squad.

“If reports are to be trusted, Ajit Agarkar failed to persuade the other selectors or himself. Jay Shah enquired as well, but Rohit Sharma responded, “We need Virat Kohli at all costs.” The official announcement of Virat Kohli’s participation in the T20 World Cup would be made prior to the team selection, according to Azad.

Kris Srikkanth’s Defense

Former India captain and ex-chairman of the selection committee Kris Srikkanth vehemently defended Kohli’s position in the T20 World Cup squad. Dismissing rumors, Srikkanth emphasized Kohli’s indispensable role in the team’s success. He highlighted Kohli’s past contributions and asserted that India cannot afford to exclude him if they aim to win the tournament.

Not a chance. At the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli is an absolute must. It was he who led us to the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinals. The Man of the Tournament was him. Who is making all of these claims? Do these people who spread rumors have another job? Why is everyone talking about this? Virat Kohli must be on the Indian team if they want to win the T20 World Cup, Srikkanth stated on his YouTube channel.

Kohli’s Absence and the Emergence of New Talent

Following Kohli’s absence from the T20 format since the previous World Cup in 2022, players like Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Shivam Dube stepped up in the middle order, showcasing their capabilities and vying for a spot in the national team.

Kohli and Rohit’s Return to T20Is

Kohli and Rohit returned to T20Is earlier this year during a series against Afghanistan. While Kohli participated in two matches, Rohit’s standout performance in the third game, where he scored a century, contributed to India’s 3-0 series victory.
