Sanjiv Goenka: "All IPL teams regret" missing Sooryavanshi

Preparations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 are in full swing, as most squads rebuild for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has opened up about the flop show in 2026 and expressed regret over not buying Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

After the end of the edition, Rishabh Pant left the franchise and completed a trade back to the Delhi Capitals (DC). Goenka sat down for a conversation with the host Shubhankar Mishra, where he shed light on Lucknow’s season and shared his views on Sooryavanshi.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise came at a time when the Lucknow were struggling with their batting unit, while the 15-year-old could have made a difference with the bat. He remarked that missing out on the Bihar-born player was his biggest regret.

The Lucknow management, interestingly, was unaware of the youngster’s existence during the IPL 2025 because only two teams, the Capitals and the Rajasthan Royals, placed a successful bid for the youngster.

“Every team owner will regret missing out on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Now, RR have a new owner (Laxmi Mittal), and he won’t release Sooryavanshi at any cost. Vaibhav has supreme confidence. He has the talent and shots, but the supreme confidence and not being overconfident is what makes Vaibhav different from others.” Lucknow Super Giants' Goenka expressed during the podcast.

“Some of the best teams on paper don't win because they don't click. Meanwhile, average teams on paper win because they click. In 2025, our bowlers did not do well, and the batters were disappointing in IPL 2026.” He revealed.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finished the 2026 season of the IPL as the leading run-getter with 776 runs in just 16 innings at an average of 48.50 and a blistering strike rate of 237.50, with the help of five half-centuries and one century at the best score of 103 runs. The left-handed batter nailed 72 sixes in the entire campaign.

He also made a superb start in the IPL 2025, when he drilled 252 runs in seven innings at an average of 36 and a fine strike rate of 206.55, thanks to one century and one half-century at the best score of 101 runs.

The 15-year-old notched up 193 runs in six innings of the T20Is at an average of 32.16 and a blistering strike rate of 189.21, thanks to two fifties at the best score of 81 runs.
