The two biggest contributors behind East Zone winning the Duleep Trophy 2026 through the first-innings lead against South Zone, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan, spoke to each other and cracked a joke. The 15-year-old remained in the spotlight throughout the campaign for his batting and the leadership role.  

Sooryavanshi was handed over the vice-captaincy of the East Zone as he stepped into Ishan Kishan’s shoes when the wicket-keeper was out of the field with an injury. The Bihar-born also enjoyed his first taste of making successful DRS (Decision Review System) calls.

Sooryavanshi became a topic of social media discussion after a clip from the BCCI went viral on social media platforms. Ishan playfully stated that the youngster took the reviews he had intended to take.

He has taken all the credit for the reviews everywhere. Even though I was about to take the review, he would come and say it so confidently, 'I'll come to you'. Then the internet will be like: Vaibhav! So he played that role really well. I'm very happy.Kishan expressed in the video, teasing Sooryavanshi.

He also shed light on how the commentators had been praising Sooryavanshi’s sharp instincts on the field. Despite being the junior, he was excellent at making multiple decisions under pressure.

Oh, you're the junior here, sorry, sorry!) And that is one quality which I love about him. And hopefully, he'll be more dangerous than what he is today. I think it's not going to be his first or the last. I think he's gonna play many more like this, and he'll keep performing the way he's doing right now.” Kishan concluded.

How Sooryavanshi and Kishan performed in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final

During the Duleep Trophy 2026 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, East Zone posted a massive score of 708 runs. India's Sooryavanshi smashed 44 runs off 37 balls at a strike rate of 118.92 with five boundaries and one six, while Kishan celebrated 270 runs off 334 balls at a strike rate of 80.84, smashing 30 boundaries and seven sixes.

In the second innings, Sooryavanshi failed to leave an impact with the bat, while Kishan drilled another impressive knock of 80 runs off 98 balls at a strike rate of 81.98 with the help of nine boundaries and three sixes.

The game ended in a group after East Zone bundled out South Zone for just 336 runs. They batted for 99.2 overs in the third innings and drew with 388/7.
