When the Mumbai Indians posted a massive score of 243 runs on the board during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, many reckoned that it would be an easy win for them. But the Pat Cummins-led side went over the line by six wickets and with eight to spare.

That was a shocking bowling performance from the Hardik Pandya-led side, whose dream of qualification is almost done for this campaign. Their two premier pacers, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, had a combined figure of 1/95 in eight overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin turns emotional at MI’s progress in IPL 2026

The former Indian all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, was shocked at how the MI side went through their business in this event. He claimed that they left the game slip off their hands despite being in a strong position.

“I’m absolutely shocked by how Mumbai played this season. My mind isn’t processing how this is even possible. And honestly, yaar, watching the Mumbai Indians, I actually feel sorry for them. They were my favourite team before the tournament, but I've had this feeling many times that — it's their game. But there has been no chance this time. The tournament is now over for them.” Ashwin expressed on his YouTube channel.

He addressed that irrespective of the surface, their batting and bowling have not worked out together. The veteran pointed out how they were the only side to give away over 220 runs against KKR in this entire tournament.

“I don’t have much faith. They conceded 220+ against KKR in the very first game, but no team conceded that many runs against KKR in the entire competition. Now, if they are chasing 230+ scores, they are struggling. Even against Chennai, they couldn’t chase 208 on a slow surface.” The Chennai-born informed in the same video.

“If they are getting batting surfaces, their bowlers have not been able to stand up. Meanwhile, once they get bowling surfaces, their batters have not been able to do well.” Ashwin concluded.
