Gill smashes fastest-ever ODI double century- IND vs WI 2nd ODI

Just a couple of days after his century in the opening ODI of the three-match series against West Indies, India’s captain, Shubman Gill, celebrated a fine century during the second ODI of the series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati during the 400+ run chase. And to better that, he converted that century into his second and fastest-ever ODI century.

On a surface where the dew was expected to make a massive difference and provide comfort for the batters in the second innings, the 400+ run chase didn’t pose any challenge to the blue brigade, who had a walk in the park, especially after the 255-run opening stand.

After getting his century on the first ball of the 21st over of the innings, he smashed a boundary on the fourth ball. Gill accelerated his knock after making it into the three-figure mark. He leaned into the whip against Jayden Seales and thumped him over the deep mid-wicket stands for a massive six.

That was followed by two successive boundaries in the same over before Gill took a step down and lofted the right-arm pacer straight down the ground for a massive six. With a single on the second ball of the 39th over, he celebrated his second and the fastest-ever double century of the ODIs in just 117 balls.

Gill overtook the previous record of Ishan Kishan, who made it in 126 balls. It was only the second time a player has scored a double century in ODI run chases after Glenn Maxwell’s famous ODI World Cup 2023 knock against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

There are 13 double centuries being scored ever in the ODIs, out of which eight came from the Indian players. Three of those eight belong to Rohit Sharma while two came from Gill's bat. And the one each belong to Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Kishan.

How did India get a comfortable position in a 400+ run chase in Guwahati?

John Campbell laid down the platform for the tourists with a 68-ball 101-run knock at a strike rate of 148.53 with nine boundaries and five sixes, while the twin centuries from captain, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo, shouldered them to 405/7 in their allotted 50 overs. That seemed to be a winning score, despite the ground being renowned as a high-scoring venue.

The 255-run opening stand saw Rohit Sharma get to the three-figure mark before being dismissed on 101 off just 75 balls with 10 boundaries and six sixes. Virat Kohli also smashed 29 runs off 19 balls as India made 400+ feel the easiest ever ODI chase.
