Mumbai Indians (MI) made a nightmarish start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with four successive victories after their record-breaking victory in the opening game of the campaign. They needed to turn around sharply during the clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. 

The MI captain, Hardik Pandya, promised to make some tough calls for this encounter as they handed two debut caps to Danish Malewar and Krish Bhagat, besides bringing back Mitchell Santner into the eleven. The home side won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which he predicted would have the presence of dew.

Mumbai didn’t get a great start to the fixture, having lost both their openers, Quinton de Kock and Malewar, early to find themselves 32/2 in five overs. Kagiso Rabada troubled the batters with his aggressive pace, as the batters failed to get the right shape with the blade.

Suryakumar Yadav came into this game under pressure with a string of low scores. But he welcomed Rabada with a massive six on the first delivery of the last over inside the powerplay. The Protea pacer went full but drifted away from the right-handed batter into the leg side. Sky stayed on the leg side and flicked it over deep square leg for a huge six.

The Mumbai-born backed it up with a boundary on the very next delivery. This time, the pacer went fuller as SKY showed his bat to hit it straight down the ground past the bowler, who had absolutely no chance in this follow-through.

MI continues to make poor start in IPL 2026

Mumbai lost their debutant opener for just two runs as he was trapped before the stumps by Rabada, who also dismissed de Kock for 13 runs. The centurion from the last encounter looked to hoist the full-length delivery out of the ground but ended up getting the leading edge into the sky before the bowler himself completed an easy catch.

The five-time champions made their way to 68 for the loss of three wickets in nine overs as their number three, Naman Dhir, clubbed an unbeaten 28 runs off 23 balls.
