The young sensation of the Indian side, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, would talk about scoring half-centuries in international cricket as he brought up his maiden fifty in the shortest format during the opening T20I of the three-match series against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.

In a small chase of 126 runs, the blue brigade needed one of their openers to fire up with a wild knock inside the powerplay, and Sooryavanshi, who couldn’t impress with the bat during the three chances he got in England, showed his real class with the bat.

On the second delivery of the second over, Sooryavanshi didn’t bother and hammered the short ball over the deep square leg for a massive six. After a boundary on the very next delivery, he picked up the length to make room and swatted it off the front foot over the long-off fence for another six.

Despite losing his partner, Abhishek Sharma, Sooryavanshi didn’t show any sign of slowing down. He put Brad Evans into the stands for a massive six before nailing Blessing Muzarabani for six and two boundaries in four balls.

Finally, with a double, Sooryavanshi celebrated his maiden international fifty as the left-handed batter, who got a stunning century at the venue in the U-19 WC final, raised his bat as the crowd applauded.

It also became the youngest time for a batter to score a maiden T20I fifty among the full-member sides, beating the previous record of Rahmanullah Gurbaz at 17 years and 296 days against Zimbabwe in 2019.

Zimbabwe made the toughest start in the series by losing Brian Bennett on the very first delivery of the game. Their top order couldn’t put any runs on the board as Mayank Yadav, on his return to the national side, breathed fire with the pace.

It was the 57-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Wessley Madhevere and Tadiwanashe Marumani that shouldered them to 125/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The latter remained unbeaten on 27 runs off 20 balls with the help of two boundaries and one six.

Powered by Sooryavanshi's 50, India completed the chase by seven wickets with 40 balls to spare and went 1-0 up in the three-match series.
