When Ishan Kishan was ruled out of the second T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, expectations were that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi would walk into the playing XI, but his return didn’t go as planned: he was dismissed for just four.

India’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, again won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first in this contest, expecting the dew to make it a little easy for them in the second innings along with the flatness of the surface. However, run scoring seemed tough for the visitors.

On the very first ball of the sixth over of the innings, Vaibhav sliced the ball from Michael Bracewell off the cue end of the bat. That should have been an easy catch to Bevon Jacobs at the backwards point region, but the fielder seemed to have lost the ball in the lights as he dropped it.

But the 15-year-old ran out of his luck in the very next over. Nathan Smith delivered a hard-length ball angled across the off stump of the southpaw as Sooryavanshi got it nowhere close to the middle as he went for a booming drive. The ball went low to the cover fielder, who grabbed a smart catch.

It wasn’t a great return for Sooryavanshi, who was dismissed for four runs. Probably, the pressure got the better of the youngster in that situation.

How India struggled in the chase: 47/2 after 7 overs in Christchurch

New Zealand didn’t make a strong start with the bat and lost three wickets inside the powerplay as they were reduced to 43/3 after the first six overs. But the fine partnership of 116 runs off 76 balls between Glenn Philips and Bevon Jacobs, both of whom celebrated fifties, somehow ended up with 180/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

India also struggled with the bat in the chase. They made just 44 runs for the loss of Sanju Samson in the powerplay before the spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell made it more tough for the visiting side with the boundaries getting dried up.
