When the Punjab Kings crossed the 220-run mark during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, the visitors needed their star batter, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, to provide them a strong start.

It was a bit tricky surface as the batters struggled once the ball got old in the middle overs. It was also crucial for one of the batters to hold one end and stay till the end to play the vital, powerful knock to match the innings of Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten 62 runs off 22 balls.

After two successive dot balls, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi went forward and flicked Arshdeep Singh effortlessly over the deep backward square-leg fence as the fielder was only a spectator. He nailed the next two deliveries for successive boundaries before taking on the brutal pace of Lockie Ferguson.

On the fourth ball of the second over, the left-handed opener pulled the short ball from outside the off stump to get a top edge and cleared the leaping slip fielder for a boundary. He used his wrist and clubbed the next two deliveries for successive sixes.

The Bihar-born again picked the full delivery against Marco Jansen and heaved it all the way over the deep mid-wicket region for a six, nearly 10 rows back. He welcomed back Arshdeep for another six, getting forward and whipping it over the deep mid-wicket fence.

But his innings came to an end on the very next ball. He made 43 runs off just 16 balls at a strike rate of 268.75, thanks to three boundaries and five sixes. The 15-year-old has now bashed 319 runs off 130 balls at a strike rate of 245.4 inside the powerplay of this IPL 2026.

Along with Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal also contributed 51 runs in just 27 balls at a strike rate of 188.89, thanks to seven boundaries and one six. Their captain, Riyan Parag, also played a strong knock of 29 runs off 16 balls, but couldn’t take them over the line.

For Punjab, apart from Stoinis, Prabhsimran Singh played a fine knock of 59 runs in 44 balls at a strike rate of 134.09 with six fours and one six. But they got the massive lift in the run rate only because of Stoinis, as they added 55 runs in the last three overs.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): RR 205/4 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 51, Yuzvendra Chahal 3/36) vs PBKS 222/4 (Marcus Stoinis 62*, Yash Raj 2/41)
