The wonder kid, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, continues to impress in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as the Rajasthan Royals (RR) locked horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens, expecting to make a strong comeback after their defeat in the previous contest against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

In the last encounter, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was rushed into the pull shot against the short ball for a golden duck. But he was aware of it from the start and used the pace of the bowler to time it over the wicket-keeper for boundaries, which underlines a lot about the 15-year-old.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smacks Sunil Narine’s second ball for massive six

Sooryavanshi’s batting against Sunil Narine was always going to be an exciting one. The KKR captain, Ajinkya Rahane, introduced his trump card in the fifth over of the innings. The first delivery was tossed up outside the off stump as the southpaw went for an expansive drive and missed it completely.

But he didn’t back down on the very next delivery. It was another tossed-up delivery as the former West Indies spinner changed the line into the middle stump. Sooryavanshi kneeled and launched it over the fielder at the deep square leg for a massive six.

In the very next over, the youngster picked the slot delivery against Cameron Green. He got under the ball nicely and biffed it straight down the ground for a massive six to complete the fifty-run opening partnership.

But his stay didn’t last long as Varun Chakravarthy, in his very first over, dismissed him for 46 runs off 28 balls with the help of six boundaries and a couple of sixes. The left-handed batter went for the big slog sweep. But he mistimed it towards the deep mid-wicket as Ramandeep Singh judged it perfectly to grab a sharp catch.

RR lose track on sluggish Kolkata surface

Apart from both the openers, the Royals continued to struggle on a slow surface. Yashasvi Jaiswal also found it hard to time the deliveries after the powerplay and returned with 39 runs off 29 balls with the help of four boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Varun Chakravarthy used the track beautifully for his fine figures of 3/14 in four overs, besides getting full support from Sunil Narine, who had figures of 1/20 in three overs.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): RR- 140/5 (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 46, Varun Chakravarthy 3/14) vs KKR.
