Watch: Ravichandran Ashwin makes shocking revelation about his Test retirement decision
Ravichandran Ashwin opens up on his Test retirement, revealing how the Perth Test snub and team changes made him realise his time was up.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has spoken about the final phase of his Test career, giving his candid thoughts about his retirement decision and changes in the environment of the Indian team. While speaking at an event, the former spinner talked about leadership, team environment, and the transition phase of Indian cricket.
Ashwin revealed that the turning point came during India’s tour of Australia in 2024. During this time, despite being the senior bowler of the Indian team, he was not included in the playing XI of a crucial game. This made him reassess his role in the team and understand that things were changing.
His retirement after the Brisbane Test led to criticism of the team management, especially with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also stepping away around the same time. However, Ashwin backed head coach Gautam Gambhir and made it clear that he does not agree with the negative narrative around the management.

He accepted that such situations are a part of a cricketer’s life, especially if younger players have to be included in the team. This clarity enabled him to take a peaceful and considered decision of going into retirement.
How the rise of Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja forced the veteran to rethink his international future
Former spinner also talked about the intense competition within the team. With players like Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja performing well, the team had multiple options in the spin department. This made him realise that Indian cricket was moving towards a new phase.
He supported Gautam Gambhir’s approach and said, “I like Gautam, and many people may have different opinions about him, but he is someone who always puts the team ahead of individuals. He credits the team, not individuals, and that's something I admire.” Ashwin also added, “There is more to Indian cricket than just a couple of people.” He further reflected on his bond with teammates, saying, “The best part about us was that none of us blamed each other. We all wanted India to win and make the country proud.”
