Thomas Balkin’s superb catch dismisses Babar Azam for 2

After a poor start with the bat in the ongoing Big Bash League 2025-26 for the Sydney Sixers, the former Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, got some good rhythm with the bat in the last three matches as he celebrated two half-centuries against Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder. The expectation naturally grew from the veteran to keep contributing massive scores with the bat.

But against the Brisbane Heat in chasing a below-average target, Babar failed for a low score. Babar Azam opened his account on the very first delivery as he nudged a ball drifting into his pads into the mid-wicket region for a quick single, but got only one single in the next five deliveries from there on.

The pressure slightly built on the opening batter as he looked to release it by playing a big shot on the penultimate ball of the third over. Against Ollie Patterson, Babar flicked the ball nicely but couldn’t keep it down. It was Thomas Balkin who ran in from the deep backwards square and dived forward to grab the fine catch just above the grass.

Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Joel Davies shared the combined figures of 6/69 in 12 overs.

The Sixers did not start as they wanted and soon lost five wickets in nine overs with just 47 runs on the board as their captain, Moises Henriques, remained unbeaten on 21 runs in 20 balls with Ollie Patterson and Matthew Kuhnemann sharing four for 20 in their combined five overs.

Brief Scores: Sydney Sixers 53/6 (Moises Henriques 26, Matthew Kuhnemmann 2/10) against Brisbane Heat 114/9 (Jack Wildermuth 31, Joel Davies 2/19)
