Tilak Verma, the left-handed batter of the Indian cricket team, smashed the pacer of South Africa side, Anrich Nortje, for a massive six out of the stadium during the opening T20I of the series in Cuttack.

India’s didn’t make a great start to the opening T20I of the three-match series against South Africa at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack as they lost their opening batter, Shubman Gill, on the very first over of the innings before captain, Suryakumar Yadav, was trapped in the same manner of the slower delivery by Lungi Ngidi.
Abhishek Sharma tried a little to recover the innings in the powerplay over but he couldn’t also extended a potentially inspiring knock and was caught at the fine leg fence. In the middle, the hosts had the two southpaws- Axar Patel, the hero of the two sides from the final of the T20 World Cup 2024, and Tilak Verma- reason for India’s Asia Cup 2025 victory against Pakistan in the final.

Verma tried to sweep Anrich Nortje’s 149.4 kmph delivery to start the over. But he missed to connect it. However, once the bowled pulled the length ball, the left-handed batter went short and was whacked into the roof of the stadium for a massive six from the blade of Verma.

India’s top three failed in the batting line-up with Gill bagging four runs in two balls while the leader got 12 runs in 11 balls. Abhishek smashed 17 runs in 12 balls as Verma found himself struggling on unbeaten 25 runs in 30 balls with the help of two fours and one six.

Earlier, India lost the toss and put into bat first on a surface which had some grass on it to help the bowlers. The management also decided not to use Sanju Samson with the wicket-keeping gloves and instead went with Jitesh Sharma in the middle order of the side.
South Africa, unlike some other teams, picked their lone spinner in Keshav Maharaj with the part-time job of Markram and Donovan Ferriera. Marco Jansen, Nortje, Sipamla and Ngidi were the pacers of the department. India had managed to reach 114/5 before 15 overs.
