West Indies announce squad for India white-ball tour: Shai Hope to lead, Jason Holder rested

West Indies  have named Shai Hope as captain for their upcoming white-ball tour of India. The series will include three ODIs and five T20Is, with the matches scheduled from September 27 to October 17 across eight cities. The tour will begin in Thiruvananthapuram.

The 'Men in Maroon' are set to leave the Caribbean on September 21 and arrive in Kerala on September 23. The first ODI will be played two days later, on September 25.

West Indies have retained most of their core players for both formats. However, Jason Holder has been rested for the entire series, while Shimron Hetmyer will be available only for the T20I matches.

Cricket West Indies have named their ODI and T20I squads for the India tour, with Shai Hope set to captain both sides. West Indies have retained most of the players who featured in their recent home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

John Campbell has returned to the ODI squad after missing the last two matches against New Zealand due to a hamstring injury. Jewel Andrew has also been included in both squads after Ackeem Auguste was ruled out following surgery in August. Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Gudakesh Motie and the Joseph brothers have retained their places in the ODI squad.

Shimron Hetmyer will join the squad for the T20I series after being given extra time to recover following the CPL. “Shimron Hetmyer, who featured in the last two matches of the New Zealand series, remains committed but has been permitted an extended recovery period post CPL and will join the squad for the T20 series,” Cricket West Indies said in a statement.

Jason Holder rested, Kamil Pooran earns maiden call-up, John Campbell returns and Hetmyer joins for T20Is

Jason Holder has been rested for the entire India tour and will not feature in either squad. Shimron Hetmyer will miss the ODIs and join West Indies for the five-match T20I series after the Caribbean Premier League. Cricket West Indies said Hetmyer has been given extra time to recover after the CPL.

Kamil Pooran has received his maiden T20I call-up and is one of the notable selections. The right-handed opener scored 273 runs in eight innings recently, with a strike rate of 159.64 and an average of 39. Quentin Sampson, who was part of West Indies' T20 World Cup squad earlier this year in India, has also been included.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said the ODI series remains important despite the team being unable to qualify automatically for the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup. The first two ODIs will complete their qualification cycle, after which West Indies will have to play the ICC qualifier next year.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said the India ODIs remain important, even though the team cannot qualify automatically for the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup. The first two matches will complete their current qualification cycle, with West Indies set to play the ICC qualifier next year.

Sammy also said the team is focused on building a strong group of players for the next T20 World Cup. “We are looking to build on the momentum from our series win against Sri Lanka, with the long-term goal of developing a strong core of players ahead of the next T20 World Cup,” he said. 

The West Indies squad will leave the Caribbean on September 21 and arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on September 23.
