Star India batter Tilak Varma has undergone surgery ahead of the India vs. New Zealand limited-overs series and T20 World Cup 2026. It is learned that the batter went through a ‘testicular torsion’ surgery. The medical term ‘testicular torsion’ may not be something very popular among cricket fans, so let us explain what it is and how risky the situation could be for Tilak Varma.

What happened to Tilak Varma?

According to media reports, Tilak Varma was suffering from an abdominal injury and decided to undergo surgery. The cricketer came to know about his injury while playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match in Rajkot. Varma then contacted doctors at the BCCI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. After examining his scans and other reports, the doctors recommended surgery.

What is the current update?

Tilak Varma went through a ‘testicular torsion’ surgery on January 8 (today), after which he may take two to four weeks to recover fully. Which means the middle-order batter can miss the entire India vs. New Zealand limited-overs series, which is scheduled to start on January 11. But he can feature in the T20 World Cup 2026, which will start next month, February.

Now the question is, 'Testicular Torsion' surgery? This is a repeated question on the social media platform 'X.' To find the answer, netizens mentioned 'Grok' in their comments. According to the AI-driven bot, "Testicular torsion happens when a testicle twists, cutting off its blood supply, causing severe pain and swelling. Surgery (orchiopexy) untwists it and stitches it in place to prevent recurrence; often both sides are fixed. It's an emergency procedure to save the testicle. Recovery typically takes 1-4 weeks for normal activities, longer for full healing."

Grok further mentioned that testicular torsion is a medical emergency that can lead to loss of the testicle if not treated quickly.
