WPL 2027 auction date revealed as Varanasi stadium in race to be second venue — Know all details

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 is going to get a massive change with the next auction and the event’s venue being publicly revealed. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been trying to find a new window for the auction as the competition is planning to shift its matches to a different city.  

Mumbai’s historic Brabourne Stadium is set to host most of the games of the WPL 2027. Vadodara’s Kotambi Stadium is fighting hard, along with the new stadium in Varanasi, to be in the race to be the second venue to host the WPL games. For the second venue to host the games, it will need permission at the governing council meeting.

Auction tentatively set for October 28 in Kochi, with Brabourne and a new venue on deck

As per the report of the Times of India (TOI), the WPL 2027 auction’s date has tentatively been scheduled for October 28 in Kochi, making a shift from its normal late-November and December window for the event. The WPL auctions are shorter than the Indian Premier League (IPL). 

With only five franchises and the squad sizes being capped at 18 players, the entire process takes a single day. It will be a mini-auction, where the teams will look to reshuffle their players. The previous auction was the first mega-auction in WPL history.

The Varanasi Stadium, constructed in Ganjari, has also been kept as an option to host the WPL 2027. It’s a stadium built across the 30.6-acre campus and has nine turf pitches, where the drainage system is designed to deal with heavy rainfall.

Before the rainfall, a Ranji Trophy game could also be played to test the new facilities in October-November. The final decision on the venue will be taken in the later stages.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCBW) finished the campaign in the top position after the group stage. They earned six victories in eight clashes at a net run rate of +1.247. They qualified for the final, where they got the better of the Delhi Capitals.

Bengaluru completed the chase of 2024 runs by six wickets with two balls to spare, thanks to the 165-run partnership for the second wicket between captain Smriti Mandhana and Georgia Voll. Mandhana smacked 87 runs off 41 balls at a strike rate of 212.40, while Voll clubbed 79 runs off 54 balls, smashing 14 boundaries.

India's Mandhana finished the WPL 2026 as the leading run-getter with 377 runs at a strike rate of 153.25, while Sophie Devine and Nandani Shamra jointly stayed at the top with 17 wickets each.
