Pakistan, who were bowled out for 171 in 48.1 overs on day one, were dismissed for 135 in just 37.3 overs in their second innings. England had earlier scored 409 in their only innings to take a 238-run lead. The win also gave England crucial ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points and improved their points percentage.
Fans were quick to react to Pakistan’s heavy defeat on social media, with one user writing, “Ye sirf PSL khel sakte hai” to mock the team. Other fans also trolled Pakistan for their poor batting and disappointing performance in the Test.
Pakistan bundled out for 171 and 135 as England win inside 3 days at Headingley
Pakistan, missing regular captain Babar Azam, struggled with the bat and were bowled out for 171 after being asked to bat first. England’s Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue led the bowling attack with five wickets each. In reply, England’s middle order impressed, with Jordan Cox scoring 73, Joe Root 66, Harry Brook 91 and Dan Lawrence 51. England were eventually bowled out for 409, giving them a 238-run lead.
Pakistan failed to fight back in their second innings and were bowled out for just 135 in 37.3 overs. Jofra Archer removed both openers with the new ball, while Robinson and Tongue continued to trouble the Pakistan batters. Tongue also bowled at around 143 kph and took three wickets, while Gus Atkinson dismissed Pakistan’s top scorer Mohammad Rizwan. England won by an innings and 103 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The victory marked a strong start to England’s new era after Ben Stokes’ retirement and Brendon McCullum’s departure as Test coach. England’s four seamers consistently bowled at the fuller length needed at Headingley, while Pakistan’s batting, bowling and fielding looked below their best. Robinson and Tongue finished with eight wickets each in the match as England wrapped up a dominant victory inside three days.
Tongue, Robinson & Archer rip through fragile batting line-up in Root's first test back as captain
England’s bowlers used pace, swing and accurate lengths to put Pakistan’s batsmen under constant pressure. Pakistan lost their first wicket for no runs in the second over and their second wicket at 13. Jofra Archer took both wickets before Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood added 38 runs for the third wicket. Ollie Robinson then broke the partnership, and Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 135 in 37.3 overs.
Mohammad Rizwan was Pakistan’s top scorer in the second innings. Coming in at No. 7, Rizwan scored 41 runs off 39 balls before becoming the ninth batsman to be dismissed. However, he could not prevent Pakistan from suffering a heavy defeat against England.
Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue shared 10 wickets for Pakistan in the first innings. Archer and Gus Atkinson joined them this time. Robinson, Tong and Jofra took 3 wickets each, the other going to Atkinson. For the second time, England's pacers took all 20 wickets against Pakistan.
