On this day: Rohit Sharma made his International debut — How he has taken India to new heights

In Indian cricket history, one name stands out with elegance, flair, and sheer brilliance with his skills and performance over the years across the formats. And that’s none other than Rohit Sharma. He has always been a great white-ball player since making his debut for India against Ireland in Belfast during the ODI match in 2007.

In the first few years, Rohit showed his incredible power and timing to set several white-ball records in his name. The performance graph went sky high when, during the Champions Trophy 2013, the former captain, MS Dhoni, suggested the Nagpur-born to open for India. That was one of the biggest turning points of Rohit’s career.

Despite making his Test debut in 2013 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, in what turned out to be Sachin Tendulkar’s 199th red-ball clash, Rohit wasn’t able to crack the five-day format. He had to wait a lot before the chance finally came in 2019 during the home series against South Africa, when he celebrated a double-century while opening the batting.

Opening and Rohit seem to be a fairytale story. Beyond the stats, his captaincy tenure, when Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s all-format captain, added a new chapter to his cricketing legacy. He led the blue brigade with a calm demeanor and strategic acumen, steering the ship through the turbulent waters as it left an incredible mark on the team’s trajectory.

When he was just 12, Rohit’s father and five siblings borrowed money from friends and sent the youngster to a cricket camp in Borivali. In that period, he used to live with his grandparents and uncle Ravi.

Lad, the coach of the camp, was impressed with the player’s off-spin and convinced Rohit’s uncle to enroll him at the Swami Vivekanand International School. In a very short time, Rohit became the focus of the school management as he continued to win the games with his off-spin.
