If one searches the most runs being scored in one delivery of the game, the Google will show that 286 runs were scored off just one delivery in Australia, which sounds a very crazy record of the game as the match was played in the late 1800s. A batter can at most hit a six and get a free hit and smash another six on the that ball. But 286 runs sound unbelievable.

Cricket has served to be on of the most entertaining spots of the world. Although it’s not famous in most of the commonwealth countries, the game has its fair share of the shocking records and renowned events lie the Indian Premier League (IPL)

Where did the "286 runs off one ball" claim actually come from?

In 1894, there was a match between Victoria and Australia. The batter hit the ball, which was stuck in a tree, as the batters kept on running for nearly 6 kilometers and collected 286 runs through it.

While swift running in between the two ends and a perfect partnership can maximum bring two runs or three runs in a game, it really makes one wonder how was it possible for a couple of openers to runs for three tons in just one ball.

It’s next to impossible to achieve. But the news was printed in a London newspaper, called the Pall Mall Gazette as the incident took place in Western Australia with a tree playing the main role. The paper was reported on January 15, 1894, as the game took place between Victoria and a scratch XI constituted of players from the neighborhood.

The Victoria team went to bat first. As the first ball was connected correctly with the bat, it went high into the air, only to be stuck in the branches of a tall jarrah tree, that was situated inside the ground.

As the ball was legitimately in the air, the openers kept running in between the wickets with the bowling side urging the umpires to declare it a ‘lost ball’. But the umpires refused to do so as the ball was pretty much visible right in front of him. They thought of using an axe and cut down the tree, but one could get their hands on one. People, who tried to get the ball back, kept missing the target, while the batters continued to run.

Finally, when the ball was shot down to the ground, the batters had run 286 times already. Victoria even decided to declare at this point, ending their innings in just one ball. They went on to win the game.

What is the maximum runs possible off a single delivery in cricket?

There is no official limited limit to the amount of runs a team can score off a single ball in the game. On the other hand, hitting a boundary on the full is the most common way to score a six, as the batter can run continuously between the wickets as long as the ball remains in play.

The maximum is practically decided by how quickly the fielding team can retrieve the ball. The umpires, however, at any point, can call the ball dead if it’s lost. In India, a few years ago, the batter hit the ball, which was lost under the covers as the umpires were quick to call it a dead ball.

While a standard maximum six applies in most cases, the higher numbers are possible through the following methods of the game, including the running and the overthrows.

What is the actual world record for most runs off a single ball — and is 286 on it?

Apart from the 286-run story, the highest records runs being scores off a single ball is 17, which was achieved by Garry Chapman in a club match in Australia as it was documented in the 1992 Guinness Book of Records.

This happened after the ball was hit into the long grass, and the fielders struggled to locate it as the batters kept completing the runs. Even eight runs were scored in a single ball of an official Test where the ball was smashed to the boundary, but an overthrow, deflecting on the batter’s bat, went for a boundary.

This rare event took place at least four times in the longest format of the game.
