Angkrish Raghuvanshi perhaps didn’t imagine getting dismissed in a rare method during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

The home captain, Rishabh Pant, won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which was of black soil and was expected to be a little tacky for the batters in countering against the pace and bounce of the spinners and also the pacers earlier with the new ball.

It was the final delivery of the fifth over of the powerplay. Angkrish Raghuvanshi guided the length delivery from Prince Yadav into the mid-on region. He set off for a single before being sent back by Cameron Green from the other end.

The throw came in at the batter’s end, who got back in with a dive. The ball hit Raghuvanshi behind as Mohammed Shami and wicket-keeper Pant started to appeal for obstructing the field dismissal. The on-field umpire took in upstairs as the third umpire had a close look at the replays.

The third umpire reckoned that the batter had changed the direction of his run while going back to the crease, which stopped the ball from hitting the stumps. The giant screen showed, which shocked the batter and the entire KKR camp.

The batter was disappointed as he had a few words with the on-field umpire. But it didn’t matter at all as the final decision was already made by then. The Mumbai-born batter smashed his bat on the floor and threw his helmet in frustration as the decision continues to grow in controversy around the game.

What is obstructing the field dismissal?

The obstructing the field dismissal is a method of law 37 where a batter willfully disrupts, distracts, or blocks the fielding side from taking a catch, running them out, or hitting the stumps, while the ball remains in play. It needs an intentional or non-accidental action to be given out by the umpire.

This law also covers the ball-handling incidents that were not part of it at the early stage. A batter might be out if they step out of the running to block a direct throw to the stumps. The dismissal put a massive pressure on KKR's top order, which fell like a pack of cards.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): KKR- 73/6 (C Green 34, Mohsin Khan 5/23) vs LSG.
