Why was the Asian Legends League 2026 in Zambia cancelled mid-season?

The Asian Legends League 2026 season in Lusaka, Zambia, has been cancelled in the middle of the tournament. It has collapsed due to severe logistical chaos, unpaid financial dues, lack of official board sanctions, and the player walkouts. The event began on July 30 between the Sri Lankan Lions and the Afghanistan Pathans.

The first game to be cancelled during the competition was between Pathans and the Asian Stars. Later, the game between Lions and the Indian Royals was cancelled. All the teams, apart from Stars and Pakistan Panthers, played three games each in the tournament.

Why the Asian Legends League got cancelled in Zambia

The Zambia Cricket Union, the country’s official governing body, put out a statement clarifying that the league was not sanctioned, approved, or endorsed by the board. The organizers of the competition failed to disburse the promised funds, leaving the venue staff, broadcast teams, and the vendors stranded without the money.

The players and the crew faced technical glitches, which delayed the proceedings of the matches, and substandard conditions. The crisis peaked when the members stopped regular play and named a random game of the group stage between the Indian Royals and Sri Lankan Lions as the final.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) treated the event as disapproved. It led major players like India’s Ambati Rayudu to leave early in the protest and prompted the home boards like the PCB to issue strict disciplinary warnings to the participating former players.

Why PCB is banning Pakistan players for featuring in this event

The PCB has added to the statement, saying it has taken serious notice of the participation of the former Pakistan players in the competition. Several players like Sharjeel Khan, Kamran and Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Hasan Raza, Rahat Ali participated in the competition.

“In light of the above, the following disciplinary measures will be taken on individuals found to have participated in the said unsanctioned event without obtaining the requisite approvals from the PCB.” The PCB issued the statement.

“A ban of two years from the issuance of any PCB No Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in approved overseas cricket leagues or events. (And) Ineligibility for any cricketing, coaching, consultancy, mentoring and/or other assignments with the PCB and the PSL for a period of two years.” It addressed.

Mohammad Hafeez, Tanvir, and Umar were among the players who signed for the league but didn’t play after learning the requisite approvals from the ICC had not come through.
