Farhan Akhtar is reportedly in talks to play a key role in Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming period sports drama. According to the latest reports, Akhtar may portray a famous Pakistani cricketer who shared a close friendship with Lala Amarnath.

As per a source quoted by Mid-Day, “Even though it’s an extended cameo, Farhan Akhtar’s role is emotionally important to the story. He plays Lala Amarnath’s close friend, who stays back in Pakistan after the Partition. The film is not just about cricket, but also about friendship during one of the most difficult times in the subcontinent’s history. Ashutosh has approached Farhan for the role, but nothing has been finalised yet.”

The film will mark the reunion of Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker nearly 25 years after Lagaan. The biopic will focus on the life of Lala Amarnath, independent India’s first Test captain and the first Indian batter to score a Test century.

Farhan Akhtar to play legendary Pakistani cricketer Fazal Mahmood — Bollywood's most daring Biopic is here

Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar is reportedly in talks to portray legendary Pakistani pace bowler Fazal Mahmood in an upcoming biopic helmed by director Lala Amarnath — and the story behind this casting choice is as compelling as the film itself. According to reports, Akhtar has been approached to play a cricketer who shared one of sport's most extraordinary cross-border friendships, a bond that survived Partition, rivalry, and decades of India-Pakistan tension.

What makes this biopic truly daring is the story at its heart. Lala Amarnath and Fazal Mahmood were both sons of Lahore — teammates in the domestic circuit in the mid-1940s, long before the 1947 Partition carved their shared homeland into two nations. Amarnath, the no-nonsense senior pro known for grooming young talent, had spotted something special in the young Mahmood, who was 16 years his junior. He became his mentor, his guide, and his friend. Then the partition happened — and overnight, teammates became rivals representing two different countries. Yet through every India-Pakistan clash that followed, their deep, lifelong friendship never broke.

That is precisely why this biopic feels so urgent and so bold. It is not just a cricket film — it is a story about two men who refused to let geopolitics erase a friendship forged on the same Lahore pitch. For Farhan Akhtar, known for his transformative, physically committed performances in sports films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, stepping into Fazal Mahmood's shoes is perhaps his most emotionally layered role yet — one that demands he carry not just the weight of a sporting legend, but the grief, nostalgia, and resilience of an entire generation divided by a line drawn on a map.

Why Farhan Akhtar is the Perfect choice to play Pakistan's greatest bowler, Fazal Mahmood, on screen

Farhan Akhtar could be the perfect choice to play Pakistan fast-bowling legend Fazal Mahmood on screen. The actor has already impressed audiences with physically demanding performances in films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Toofaan. Playing a vintage-era cricketer in Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming Lala Amarnath biopic would give Farhan another strong opportunity to showcase his range and screen presence.

The casting also makes sense from a storytelling point of view. Legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath, who is expected to be played by Aamir Khan, was known for spotting and mentoring young talent during his career. He had identified Fazal Mahmood’s potential at a young age, despite there being a 16-year age gap between them. Since Aamir is older than Farhan in real life as well, the on-screen dynamic between the two actors could feel natural and believable.

Farhan may also be able to handle the emotional depth of Fazal Mahmood’s Partition-era journey. During the violence of 1947, Fazal reportedly faced life-threatening situations while travelling by train as riots broke out across the country. According to his autobiography From Dusk to Dawn, India’s first Test captain CK Nayudu stepped in to protect him from a dangerous mob during the journey. Armed with a cricket bat, Nayudu warned the attackers to stay away, helping Fazal continue his journey to Lahore safely. The dramatic and emotional nature of these moments could suit Farhan Akhtar’s acting style perfectly.

Lala Amarnath biopic: Cast, director, release date & what the film will reveal about Fazal Mahmood's legacy

Unlike Lagaan, which combined fictional storytelling with a colonial-era sports backdrop, the upcoming Lala Amarnath biopic is expected to stay closely rooted in real historical events. Set around the time of India’s Partition in 1947, the film will reportedly explore the life, struggles, and legacy of India’s first Test captain, with cricket serving as the emotional core of the story.

According to reports, the film will not only focus on cricket but also highlight friendship and human relationships during one of the most turbulent chapters in the subcontinent’s history. Aamir Khan is set to play the lead role of Lala Amarnath, while the narrative is also expected to shed light on the legacy of legendary Pakistani fast bowler Fazal Mahmood and his bond with Amarnath.

As per an earlier report by Pinkvilla, the film is being produced by Aamir Khan Productions along with Excel Entertainment and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. The project is reportedly scheduled to go on floors around October 2026 with a start-to-finish shooting schedule. While Farhan Akhtar’s acting role is yet to be officially confirmed, his banner Excel Entertainment is already closely associated with the venture. The film also brings together a strong creative team, with Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi reportedly working on refining the screenplay.
