The debutant pacer for the Indian side, Gurnoor Brar, takes his maiden wicket in his very first over during the opening ODI of the three-match series against Afghanistan in Dharamsala.

Gurnoor Brar, who made his debut during the opening ODI of the three-match series against Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, picked up his maiden wicket of international cricket in his very first over as the entire team congratulated him.
In a rain curtailed contest of 25 overs, India’s captain, Shubman Gill, won the toss and decided to bowl first in an expectation of using the help from the surface, which was under the covers for a long time due to the persistent rain. He showed immense belief on the debutant Brar by throwing him the new ball ahead of Prasidh Krishna.

After an 11-run opening over from Arshdeep Singh, the pressure was on the debutant only to leak runs and pick up wickets with the new ball. The latter gave away only two singles in his first four balls before removing Ibrahim Zadran for one run off four balls to pick his maiden wicket.

It was a length delivery which moved away a late as the right-handed batter went for the drive but got a leading edge in the air. Gill stepped backward at mid-off and took a comfortable catch to draw the first blood. Brar was over the moon as it was his maiden international wicket.

He trapped the new batter, Sediqullah Atal, on the very first ball as the home side went for the review. The ball was pitching outside the leg stump as the original decision stayed.
From the other end, Arshdeep pick two wickets inside the five-over powerplay to put the visitors under immense pressure.

Brar has overall just 12 wickets in nine innings of the List-A cricket at an average of 39 and an expensive economy rate of 6.47 for the Punjab side. But the BCCI selectors turned their focus at the 26-year-old, given the hit-the-deck ability he offers and could prove to be vital for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027.
At six-five, he is a towering presence and can swing the ball with the seam movement at the high pace. He was a net bowler for the Mumbai Indians in the 2019 season and earned his maiden Test cap during the series against Afghanistan.
It was Gill, who spotted Brar, during the U-19 days and helped him get into the Mohali district team, setting him on the path from the Punjab U-23 cricket to the national debut under his leadership.
