IPL teams push for tax relief seek sporting event status for match tickets
IPL teams seek GST relief by reclassifying match tickets as sporting events, aiming to reduce tax from 40% to 18% and improve fan affordability.

Indian Premier League franchises have reportedly approached the finance ministry seeking a reclassification of match tickets from "entertainment" to "sporting events." This initiative will decrease the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on tickets from 40% down to 18% which will make the tickets more affordable for fans.
The proposal currently under consideration will be submitted to the GST Council for evaluation according to reports. IPL tickets will receive the same tax treatment as other recognized sporting events conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India if the proposal receives approval.
Franchises urge government to reclassify IPL tickets under sports category
Franchises have argued that IPL matches are mainstream sporting events and should not be grouped under categories meant for “sin goods” like betting and gambling. The current 40% GST slab was introduced after the 56th GST Council meeting, which moved IPL tickets from their original 28% tax category to a more expensive tax rate.

Teams believe this classification is inconsistent with the intent of the tax system, as cricket matches are family-friendly events and a major part of India’s sports culture. They have also highlighted that several major services which include luxury hotels and business-class travel have been subjected to an 18% tax rate, which creates problems regarding consistent GST treatment.
Current tax structure impacting revenue and fan affordability
The higher GST rate will affect both ticket prices and the entire sports industry according to experts. Higher ticket prices will decrease stadium attendance which will decrease fan interaction and match-day energy.
The IPL generates substantial economic benefits for both the tourism industry and the hospitality sector and local business operations. Fans will find it easier to attend matches when tax rates decrease which will simultaneously increase economic activity in the surrounding areas. The GST Council will discuss the matter which will determine how sports taxation in India will develop and the cost of watching live cricket matches.
