Defending 169 runs in the second semifinal of the Asian Games 2026 against Sri Lanka at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, India, India needed a strong start with the ball, and who better than premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah to break the back of the opponents with a double-wicket opening over?

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which was slow and was expected to help the spinners. India brought back Bumrah for this contest, besides going with their spin trio in the playing eleven, who create problems for the visiting batters.

Bumrah, as expected, was given the ball to open the attack. He started with a good length ball just outside the off stump as Sineth Jayawardena got right behind the line in defence. The second ball of the second innings trapped the left-handed batter before the stumps for a second-ball duck.

The third ball was a wide full-toss from the pacer as Sohan de Livera leaned across and pushed it to cover point. The fast bowler shortened the length and pushed one across the southpaw. The fifth delivery saw Sanju Samson grab a one-handed catch to dismiss Livera for a three-ball duck.

On the final ball, the Gujarat bowler conceded one run as it broke the opposition’s back, leaving them stuck at 1/2. His line and length were impressive and never allowed the batters to break free.

India start strongly with the ball as Sri Lanka chase 170 for a spot in the final

Batting first, India were restricted to 169 for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed 38 runs off 21 balls at a strike rate of 180.95 with six boundaries and a couple of sixes. Ishan Kishan played a superb knock of unbeaten 80 runs off 46 balls, smashing four boundaries and five sixes.

Sri Lanka continued to lose wickets at regular intervals in the second innings. All three batters of their top order gathered ducks besides their name as they found themselves 31/6 in 4.5 overs. India were on the verge of reaching the final to face Pakistan for the Gold Medal.
