Mumbai went off to a strong start with the bat inside the powerplay, before slowing down in the middle phase of the innings as they failed to counter the variations of Noor Ahmed along with the pacers. They continued to lose wickets in the last half of the innings to fall short of a competitive score on the board.

It has been an open secret for the yellow franchise that they have been massively dependent on Sanju Samson’s batting contribution in this edition. Whenever he has failed to leave a mark at the opening spot, the team has struggled to get going.

For the first tick of the box, Mumbai was to send back the Kerala-born. Jasprit Bumrah, who was smashed for his second-worst figures in the history of the IPL against the Sunrisers Hyderabad a few nights ago, could have made the dream start. 

His steady out-swinging delivery got the outside edge of Samson before Will Jacks dropped the sitter at the slip position. But Bumrah’s class was enough to get the batter twice in the same over.

On the last ball of the second over, Bumrah had his man for 11 runs off nine balls with the help of two boundaries. It was another outswinger outside the off stump. It got extra bounce and got the edge of the batter before Ryan Ricketon grabbed an easy catch behind the stumps.

CSK make clinical start in 160-run chase

After the dismissal of Samson, it was a golden chance for the other CSK batters to step up and take on the responsibility in a do-or-die situation for them. Urvil Patel played a decent and impactful knock of 24 runs off 12 balls with two boundaries and as many sixes.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad was 26 runs in 13 balls, shouldering on two boundaries and two sixes. It was still a tough surface where the home side needed to show some smartness with the bat.
