The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, recently confirmed that India have turned down a request from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The request emerged due to ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, which has cast doubt on the country's ability to host the tournament this year. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh before making a final decision on whether the event will be relocated.
Jay Shah gives clarification
In a statement to the Times of India, Jay Shah explained the BCCI's position, noting that India are already set to host the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. “We do not want to give any signal that we want to host consecutive World Cups,” Shah emphasized, making it clear that the BCCI intends to focus on the upcoming 50-overs World Cup rather than take on additional hosting responsibilities.
BCCI's stance on Pink-Ball tests and new bowling coach appointment
In the same interview, Shah also touched on the BCCI's reluctance to host pink-ball Test matches, citing concerns over the length and viewer experience of such games. The last pink-ball Test in India took place in Bengaluru in 2022 against Sri Lanka. Shah expressed reservations about the format, saying, “You buy a ticket for a five-day match, but the game ends in 2-3 days... There is no refund. I am slightly emotional about this.”
In a significant development for Indian cricket, former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach for the Indian men's team. Morkel, who replaces Paras Mhambrey, will begin his tenure during the upcoming series against Bangladesh, starting with the first Test in Chennai on September 19. His contract extends until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. The appointment reflects a continuation of Morkel's successful working relationship with Gautam Gambhir, having previously collaborated at Lucknow Super Giants during the IPL.
