When the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted 192 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the home side needed a strong start inside the powerplay as they left a few runs in the middle.

CSK started in an electrifying manner as they smashed 72 runs for the loss of two wickets. But once the spinners came into the attack, they struggled to nail the big shots, and that increased the pressure on them towards the death overs.

Khaleel Ahmed sends back Sunil Narine in IPL 2026 vs KKR

For a change, the Knight Riders decided to use Sunil Narine as the opener with Finn Allen, with their captain, Ajinkya Rahane, being pushed back at number three. They expected the left-handed batter to provide them a strong start inside the power play to work upon in the middle overs.

Narine’s promotion from lower to top order meant Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn’t use the left-arm spinner, Akeal Hossein, with the new ball. The left-arm seamer, Khaleel Ahmed, was given the role to bowl the very first over, and the southpaw clubbed the pacer over the mid-wicket region for a massive six.

Watch the video here:

The former West Indies batter got a lucky boundary off Anshul Kamboj into the fine leg region before smashing Khaleel for another six over the wide long-on region. But the Rajasthan-born finally had his revenge as he sent back the batter for 24 runs off 17 balls.

It was a full delivery into the leg stump from the pacer as the ball came with the angle round the wicket. Narine was cramped for room and wanted to flick as the thick leading edge looped into the hands of the short third man, where the field accepted an easy catch.

CSK continue to pick regular wickets despite poor fielding

CSK was superbly poor with their fielding performance. Dewald Brevis dropped a simple catch off Angkrish Raghuvanshi as the ball jumped off his hands for a six, while Gaikwad couldn’t hold on to Narine earlier. Even Sarfaraz Khan failed to grab a simple running catch.

Despite that, they were able to pick five wickets in 12 overs as the required run rate created massive pressure on the KKR side, who, however, had a long batting line-up. Chennai used their spinners really well in this contest.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): KKR 104/6 (A Rahane 28, Noor Ahmed 3/19) vs CSK- 192/5 (Sanju Samson 48, Katik Tyagi 2/35)
