Joe Root is set to make a surprise return as England captain after Ben Stokes was ruled out of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. Stokes' absence comes amid an ongoing investigation into an off-field incident involving the England skipper and fast bowler Gus Atkinson.

Dropped from the England team for the second Test, Stokes has arguably reached one of the most difficult moments of his career. Widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders of his generation, Stokes came under heavy criticism after reportedly breaking the team's midnight curfew to visit a London nightclub following the first Test. An altercation involving a rugby player, Stokes, and Atkinson prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board to take disciplinary action.

While Stokes has only been left out of the second Test for now, speculation about his future in international cricket is beginning to grow. However, former England captain Nasser Hussain has come out in support of Stokes, urging people not to make any judgments about his career at a time when the all-rounder is likely dealing with significant emotional pressure.

What Nasser Hussain actually said about Ben Stokes

Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Nasser Hussain strongly backed Ben Stokes despite the controversy surrounding the England captain.

"Ben Stokes has been there for England a lot," Hussain said. "He's been there as a captain, he's been there as a player at their finest moments — 50-over World Cups, T20 World Cups."

While acknowledging Stokes' mistake, Hussain made it clear that he believes the all-rounder deserves support rather than harsh judgment.

"He's been a warrior for England, and he got it wrong this time — he got it horribly wrong. I don't think that is a sackable offence. Ben will be in a dark place at the moment. I just hope Ben doesn't think, 'I've let so many people down that I'm going to retire. I'm going to make an emotional decision and retire,' because I think that would be a really sad way to end for one of England's greats," he added.

There has been growing speculation about Stokes' future following the incident, with reports suggesting he may seek advice from some of his long-time mentors before making any major decision. However, Hussain does not want to see one of England's greatest cricketers leave the game under such circumstances.

"One of England's greats should not go out like that. I think he deserves better. I do feel a bit sad if this was the last we saw of Ben Stokes — I really hope it's not," he concluded.

The Ben Stokes nightclub incident — What we know so far

The incident took place in the early hours of June 8, shortly after England's 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson reportedly visited the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea after the match celebrations. According to reports, players from the rugby club Saracens were also present at the venue.

The controversy escalated when an altercation reportedly broke out involving a Saracens player, Atkinson, and a security guard. More importantly, both Stokes and Atkinson were allegedly at the nightclub after England's strict midnight curfew, which had been introduced following previous disciplinary issues within the team.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has referred the matter to the independent Cricket Regulator for investigation. While reports suggest Stokes is considering his future as England captain, ECB managing director Rob Key defended the team's overall culture, saying that the majority of England's players are highly professional and committed to maximising their potential.

Why Stokes remains irreplaceable to England despite the controversy

Ben Stokes has been one of the most influential cricketers in England's history. His legacy was cemented in 2019 when he played a match-winning, unbeaten 84 in the ODI World Cup final against New Zealand and later produced a remarkable 135* at Headingley in the Ashes. Those innings showcased his fighting spirit, determination, and ability to deliver under pressure, making him one of England's greatest match-winners.

As England captain, Stokes helped transform the Test team alongside head coach Brendon McCullum. Their aggressive "Bazball" approach brought renewed excitement to red-ball cricket and delivered memorable series victories against New Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan. Although the strategy has also produced mixed results, including defeats in India and Pakistan, Stokes remains the driving force behind England's modern Test identity.

His overall record highlights his value to the team. In 121 Tests, Stokes has scored 7,228 runs at an average of 34.58, including 14 centuries and 37 half-centuries. With the ball, he has taken 246 wickets at an average of 31.25, with best figures of 6/22. Few players in world cricket can match his impact as an all-rounder, which is why England still view him as an irreplaceable figure despite the current controversy.
