Pakistan started aggressively with two quick wickets against India’s top order during their opening encounter against the arch-rivals, India, in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. They don’t have a great record against this opponent in the T20 WCs, with just two victories in 2012 and 2016.

However, after India decided to bat first on a good surface on winning the toss, it was up to the Fatima Sana-led side to make early inroads to put the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side under early pressure.

The celebration: Pakistan players go wild after dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues in IND vs PAK clash

It was the second ball of the fourth over. Tasmia Rubab went with a fuller delivery that was angled across to Jemimah Rodrigues, who was feeling pressure with one run off six balls before that delivery. She played an ungainly shot by looking to heave it into the leg side and got a top edge.

The ball went straight up, where Natalia came in from the cover region. She allowed the ball to pop out of his hands but recovered quickly to grab the ball at the end. She threw the ball on the turf in anger as the entire Pakistan side started an aggressive celebration.

The very first ball of the game was timed over the covers for a beautiful six by Shafali Verma to send a clear message to the opposition, who made a strong return to the game with the opener’s wicket on the fifth ball. With Jemimah’s wicket, the blue brigade was under tremendous pressure.

However, the experienced duo of Harmanpreet and Smriti Mandhana gave them solidarity with a partnership of over 85 runs to take the run-rate close to eight. The latter moved to 64 runs off just 42 balls with support from the captain at the other end.
