Sai Sudharsan's elbow injury update — will GT's Orange cap leader play their remaining matches?
Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan is managing an elbow injury heading into the final stretch of IPL 2026. The Orange Cap leader has not been ruled out, but his fitness is a genuine concern for GT with their playoff push still alive.

The Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Gujarat Titans by 29 runs in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens on Saturday, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Batting first, KKR posted a massive total of 247/2 in 20 overs, thanks to brilliant innings from Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and Cameron Green. In reply, Gujarat Titans managed 218/3 and eventually fell short despite impressive knocks from Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler.
Amid the disappointing defeat and growing playoff pressure, the Gujarat Titans also faced an injury concern involving their highest run-scorer, Sai Sudharsan. The left-hander suffered a freak elbow injury during the match.
GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel later provided an update on Sudharsan, who had retired hurt during the game in Kolkata. The opener was struck on the elbow on the final ball of the third over, bowled by Kartik Tyagi while attempting a pull shot to a short-of-length delivery. However, despite the injury scare, Sudharsan later returned to the crease and went on to score a fighting half-century for his side.
What happened to Sai Sudharsan's elbow — and how serious is it?
The injury happened during the Gujarat Titans’ chase when Kartik Tyagi bowled a sharp short ball at around 138kph. Sai Sudharsan tried to play a pull shot but mistimed it, and the ball struck him hard on his left elbow and hand.
Even after taking the painful blow, Sudharsan managed to complete a single as the ball rolled towards the leg side. However, immediately after finishing the run, he dropped to the ground in pain and was seen holding his arm. The impact was so strong that he also lost control of his bat while attempting the shot.

The Gujarat Titans physio quickly came onto the field to check on the opener as players from both teams looked worried. After receiving medical attention, Sudharsan was unable to continue and walked off, retired hurt, giving GT a major concern during a crucial stage of the match.
The Eden Gardens crowd applauded the youngster as he slowly returned to the dugout. Despite the injury scare, Sudharsan later came back to bat and completed a fighting half-century for the Gujarat Titans.
What Sai Sudharsan and GT management said about his fitness
Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel admitted that Sai Sudharsan’s injury came at a difficult time for the team, especially when the opener looked in excellent touch during the chase against Kolkata Knight Riders.
The Indian player had started the innings confidently alongside captain Shubman Gill before being forced to retire hurt on the final ball of the third over. He was struck hard on the elbow by a sharp delivery from Kartik Tyagi and appeared to be in serious discomfort after the impact.

However, there was relief for the Gujarat Titans later in the innings as Sudharsan returned to bat and completed his half-century despite the injury scare.
Speaking after the match, Parthiv Patel provided a positive update on the youngster’s condition. “It was a good thing that he could come out later and bat. It was a direct impact on the elbow, but it was good that he could bat again,” said Parthiv Patel.
The GT batting coach also explained how the injury affected the team’s momentum during the run chase. According to Patel, losing a well-set batter at such a crucial stage made things difficult for the Gujarat Titans. “Obviously, this is a kind of pitch where you want your set batter to continue, and it is not always easy for a new batter to come in and find that momentum. So yes, definitely that injury came at the wrong time for us, because Sai Sudharsan was batting very well,” Patel added.
Despite the setback, Patel accepted that injuries are part of the game and backed the strength of the Gujarat Titans' batting lineup. “But these are part of the game; you can't do anything about it. We do have quality batters, but it is what it is. Can't do much about it,” he concluded.
What GT lose if Sai Sudharsan misses out — and who steps up?
Sai Sudharsan’s injury concern has added fresh pressure on the Gujarat Titans at a crucial stage of the IPL 2026 season. With the playoff race becoming tighter, the fitness of key players could play a major role in deciding the team’s future in the tournament.
Sudharsan has been one of GT’s most consistent performers this season and remains the franchise’s leading run-scorer. His absence would be a massive blow to the batting unit, especially at the top of the order where he has provided stability and quick starts throughout the campaign.
If Sudharsan is unable to feature in the next match, the Gujarat Titans could consider bringing in Kumar Kushagra as a replacement option in the playing XI. The youngster could add depth to the batting line-up if the team decides to make changes. However, the Gujarat Titans management has not yet released any official statement regarding the seriousness of Sudharsan’s injury or his availability for the upcoming matches.
For now, GT fans will be hoping the injury is not serious and that Sai Sudharsan returns fully fit as the team pushes for a playoff spot.
