In Match number 13 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw Ireland taking on Canada at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. Both Ireland and Canada were under pressure to secure their first win and earn points in the tournament after losing their respective opening matches.
Ireland suffered a comprehensive defeat against India by eight wickets earlier in the week, while Canada was overpowered by a spirited USA team, losing by seven wickets in a high-scoring match in Dallas. In the end, a spirited Canadian side edged past the Test full-time nation, Ireland, by 12 runs. This marked the second time Canada has beaten a Test-playing nation, with both victories against Ireland. It is also their first victory in the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup.
The Irish bowlers capitalized on the seam-friendly conditions from the early morning start, quickly dismissing both Canadian openers. Mark Adair struck first, removing Navneet Dhaliwal (6) in the third over, followed by Craig Young sending back Aaron Johnson (14). Despite a few boundaries from Johnson, Ireland’s tight bowling restricted Canada to 137/7 in 20 overs. Barry McCarthy was the standout bowler with figures of 2/24, while Craig Young also impressed with 2/32. Mark Adair and Gareth Delany each chipped in with a wicket, showcasing a strong bowling performance from the Irish team.
Canada struggled at 42/3 but Nicolas Kirton’s 49 off 35 balls, with three fours and two sixes, turned the game around. Supported by Shreyas Movva’s 37 runs, Kirton’s efforts helped stabilize the innings, leading to a competitive total despite early setbacks.
In the chase of a mediocre total, the Irish team did have a cautious start courtesy of some tight line and length bowling from the Canadian bowlers. The skipper Paul Stirling was looking for runs from ball one but did not have any luck. Unfortunately he departed after playing a scracthy innings of 9 (17) to Jeremy Gordon. After that none of the Ireland batter never got going as they kept on loosing wickets at regular intervals and eventually managed to score just 125 runs in the 20 overs. The star with the bat for the Irish team were George Dockrell (30*) and Mark Adair (34).
The Canada bowlers were on song right from the word go as they never let any Ireland batter get settle in. The skipper Saad Bin Zafar rotated his bowlers brilliantly. Especially Jeremy Gordon who troubled Stirling with the new ball and eventually got his wicket caught. Gordon was the pick of the Canadian bowlers as he ended the game with a bowling figure of 2/16 in his four over. He even bowled the last over where he gave away just four runs defending 15 runs. Other star performer was Dillon Heyliger who picked also ended the game with a bowling figure of 2/18.
