After a poor start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign, the Kolkata Knight Riders opened their account with two successive victories while the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has continued to boost their confidence, being among the top four franchises of the points table.

The home captain, Pat Cummins, won the toss and decided to bat first on a dry surface, which was expected to get slow in the second innings under the heat, creating issues for the batter in playing the free-flowing shots around the park.

It was a new tactic from the Kolkata Knight Riders management to open the bowling with their mystery spinner, Sunil Narine, who was the biggest contributor for them to win the previous contest with a superb double-wicket super over against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Travis Head welcomed Vaibhav Arora with four boundaries in the second over of the innings. But the competition was expected to be between the off spinner and the aggressive left-handed opening batter, who won the battle in the third over.

On the fourth delivery, the Australian kneeled and swept the full and straight delivery over the square leg region and had plenty of power as the ball sailed into the stands for a massive six. He backed it up with a boundary, leaning forward and hammering the drive over the mid-on region for a four.

Despite the wicket of Abhishek Sharma, KKR wasn’t able to dry up the runs inside the powerplay, which ended with 71 runs for the loss of one wicket for the 2016 champions. Head celebrated his half-century off 22 balls, punching a massive six against Varun Chakaravarthy.

SRH blew away KKR inside power play

Hyderabad lost their Indian left-handed opener in the fourth over of the innings, thanks to the short ball from Kartik Tyagi at the Punjab-born, who failed to connect the pull sweetly. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan, who was dismissed for a golden duck in the previous game, started in a brutal mode.

The new tactic of using Narine inside the powerplay won’t allow the Kolkata side to bring him inside the middle overs. It had a do-or-die game for the 2024 champions, being in ninth position in the table.
