During the Duleep Trophy 2026 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai between East Zone and South Zone, the focus was on the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who faced Mohammed Siraj’s new-ball bowling after the Indian pacer was added to the squad following the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

East Zone started the event with a win over the North-East Zone in the first quarter-final in Bengaluru by an innings and 210 runs. They continued their superb performance in the first semifinal against Central Zone, winning by four wickets in the 162-run chase.

Sooryavanshi tears into Siraj with a 14-run over in the Duleep Trophy final

It was shocking to see the South Zone’s captain, Tilak Varma, putting a defensive field against Sooryavanshi, who grabbed it with both hands. The left-handed batter started the third over with a fine boundary, squeezed through the backward point region before nailing two boundaries in three balls against MD Nidheesh.

The seventh over of the innings saw Sooryavanshi coming up against Mohammed Siraj, who looked to be aggressive against the southpaw. The Bihar-born drilled the second ball through point as it raced away for a boundary. On the very next delivery, he took the aerial route and cleared the ropes for a massive six.

The over ended with another boundary as Sooryavanshi went hard against the pitched-up delivery of Siraj and punched it with power to cross the field. The Indian pacer looked clueless against the youngster.

How Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran gave East Zone a flying start in Chennai

With Sooryavanshi smashing from one end, his opening partner, Abhimanyu Easwaran, also continued the same aggression and got his first boundary in the deep against Siraj. He shimmied down the track and smocked Tripurana Vijay for a fine boundary before smashing Siraj again for successive boundaries.

The Bengal opener wasn’t even afraid of nailing the big shots as he whacked a massive six against Viraj and celebrated his half-century off just 46 balls. East Zone completed the century stand before India's Sooryavanshi was dismissed for 44 runs off 37 balls, thanks to five boundaries and one six.

Brief Scores: East Zone- 126/1 (Abhimanyu Easwaran 71, Chama V Milind 1/16) vs South Zone.
