India's top 10 successful T20I chases in history, Ranked

India have produced multiple run chases in T20Is, with some of their biggest successes against strong opposition. From the 211-run chase against Sri Lanka in Mohali in 2009 to recent high-scoring wins, the list shows how India's batting has improved over the years in the shortest format.  

The record book features a mix of dominating batting performances and tense finishes. They have not always finished the chase comfortably. Some of these games went down to the wire, while a few others were wrapped up with several deliveries remaining.

It has always been a pressurized situation for the batters in the massive run chases. Starting from the openers, it becomes very important for them to provide the team a strong start to lay down the base inside the powerplay and allow the middle order to build on that.

Even after a strong start, the responsibility remains on the lower order to continue the success and get the victory under their belt. In these massive run-chases, every single batter needs to play a major role in the innings.

With several scores being chased that have crossed the 195-run mark, the list of the biggest successful T20I chases of the Indian side contains some of the team’s most notable batting performances. Here is a look at their top 10 successful T20I chases in history, ranked by the final score of the blue brigade-

#10 Chasing 195/4 vs Australia in 2020 (Sydney)-

It was the second T20I of the 2020 series between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where the home side batted first and posted a massive score of 194 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Their captain, Matthew Wade, nailed a dashing knock of 58 runs off 32 balls, thanks to 10 boundaries and one six.

The blue brigade completed the chase by six wickets with two balls to spare, shouldering the contributions of Virat Kohli’s 22-ball 40-run knock and Shikhar Dhawan’s 52 runs off just 36 balls before Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 42 runs in just 22 balls, thanks to his three fours and a pair of sixes.

#9 Chasing 199/5 vs West Indies in 2026 (Kolkata)-

During the semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India were put under pressure with a massive score of 195/4 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to the 76-run fifth-wicket stand between Rovman Powell and Jason Holder off just 35 balls.

Having lost Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma inside the powerplay, the hosts came under serious trouble. But Sanju Samson held his nerve and shouldered them over the line by five wickets with a fine unbeaten knock of 97 runs off 50 balls, including 12 boundaries and six sixes.

#8 Chasing 200/3 vs Australia in 2016 (Sydney)-

At the Sydney Cricket Ground during the third T20I of the 2016 series between Australia and India, the home side registered a huge score of 197 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to their captain, Shane Watson, who celebrated a fine undefeated knock of 124 runs off just 71 balls, shouldering on 10 boundaries and six sixes.

The blue brigade completed the chase by seven wickets on the last delivery of the innings. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recorded their respective fifties with the bat, while Suresh Raina remained undefeated on 49 runs in just 25 balls, based on six boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 196.

#7 Chasing 201/3 vs England in 2018 (Bristol)-

During the third T20I of the 2018 series in Bristol against the three-time champions, England recorded a huge score of 198 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Their opener, Jason Roy, drilled a superb knock of 67 runs off 31 balls at a strike rate of 216.12, thanks to four boundaries and seven sixes.

India killed the chase by seven wickets with eight balls to spare. Rohit Sharma celebrated an unbeaten knock of 100 runs off just 56 balls at a strike rate of 178.57, thanks to 11 boundaries and five sixes, while Hardik cracked 33* runs in just 14 balls at a strike rate of 235.71.

#6 Chasing 202/4 vs Australia in 2013 (Rajkot)-

It was the one-off T20I of the 2013 series between India and Australia at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The visitors posted a huge score of 201 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs as their opener, Aaron Finch, cracked a dashing knock of 89 runs off 52 balls at a strike rate of 171.15 with 14 boundaries and one six. 

India completed the chase by six wickets, after being restricted to 100/4 in 11.1 overs. Yuvraj played a sensational knock of undefeated 77 runs off just 35 balls at a strike rate of 220, thanks to eight boundaries and five over boundaries. Dhawan also contributed 32 runs off 19 balls.

#5 Chasing 204/4 vs New Zealand in 2020 (Auckland)-

During the opening T20I of the 2020 series at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand blasted a huge score of 203 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs, shouldering on the three fifties from captain Kane Williamson, Colin Munro, and Ross Taylor, who remained unbeaten on 54 runs off 27 balls, thanks to his three boundaries and as many sixes.

India completed the chase six wickets with an over to spare, building on the 99-run partnership for the second wicket between the two half-centurions, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 58 runs off 29 balls, thanks to his five boundaries and three sixes.

#4 Chasing 209/3 vs New Zealand in 2026 (Raipur)-

During the second T20I of the 2026 season at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, the Blackcaps posted a huge score of 208 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Rachin Ravindra drilled 44 runs off 26 balls while their captain, Mitchell Santner, remained unbeaten on 47 runs off 27 balls, thanks to his six fours and one six.

Despite losing both openers for six runs in 1.1 overs, India completed the chase by seven wickets in more than four overs to spare. Their captain, Suryakumar Yadav, remained unbeaten on 82 runs off 37 balls, as he celebrated a 122-run third-wicket stand with Kishan, who notched up 76 runs off 32 balls.

#3 Chasing 209/8 vs Australia in 2023 (Visakhapatnam)-

Four days after the ODI World Cup 2023 final, India and Australia were locked horns with each other in a T20I series. During the opening encounter, Australia registered a huge score of 208 runs for the loss of three wickets, thanks to Josh Inglis’ 110 runs off 50 balls, including 11 boundaries and eight sixes. It was a sensational knock from the right-handed batter. 

Despite the 112-run third-wicket stand between SKY and Kishan, India struggled in the death overs as they kept losing regular wickets. Rinku Singh, finally, did the onus and remained unbeaten on 22 runs to complete the nervy chase by two wickets on the penultimate delivery.

Brief Scores: India 209/8 (Suryakumar Yadav 80, Tanveer Sangha 2/47) beat Australia 208/3 (Josh Inglis 110, Prasidh Krishna 1/50) by 2 wickets.

#2 Chasing 209/4 vs West Indies in 2019 (Hyderabad)-

It was the opening T20I of the 2019 series between India and West Indies at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, where the latter recorded a massive score of 207 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Evin Lewis smashed 40 runs off 17 balls while Shimron Hetmyer cracked 56 runs off 41 deliveries, smashing a pair of boundaries and four sixes.

The blue brigade completed the chase by six wickets with eight balls to spare. The 100-run stand for the second wicket was followed by a 48-run partnership as captain Kohli remained unbeaten on 94 runs off 50 balls, thanks to six boundaries and as many sixes. KL Rahul also contributed 62 runs off 40 balls.

#1 Chasing 211/4 vs Sri Lanka in 2009 (Mohali)-

India’s highest-ever successful chase in T20Is came in 2009 between India and Sri Lanka. The latter cracked a massive score of 206 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to their captain, Kumar Sangakkara, who nailed 59 runs off 31 balls at a strike rate of 190.32, thanks to eight boundaries and a couple of sixes. 

The blue brigade, in reply, completed the chase by six wickets with five balls to spare. After Sehwag’s 64-run knock off just 36 balls at a strike rate of nearly 178, Yuvraj remained unbeaten on 60 runs off just 25 balls, thanks to his three fours and five sixes.
