The Kolkata Knight Riders face the Delhi Capitals in a crucial Match 51 of IPL 2026 on Friday, May 8, 2026. While DC's KL Rahul is fully fit and leading his side, the major talking point for KKR remains the availability of their ₹18 crore signing, Matheesha Pathirana.

Will KKR Risk Pathirana in Do-or-Die Clash against DC?

The Knight Riders' season proved to be a downhill battle, and their bowling unit has sorely missed an expert death-over weapon. Matheesha Pathirana, acquired for ₹18 crore, returned to India in May after suffering from a calf strain during the T20 World Cup. While he had been training with the squad for more than two weeks and passed his fitness tests, team mentor Dwayne Bravo and KKR management have been tight-lipped about his place in the starting lineup.

According to reports from the KKR camp, while Pathirana is "match fit," the team is concerned about rushing him into intense games too late in the tournament and without proper rhythm. However, with KKR currently in eighth place and needing to win nearly all of the remaining matches to remain in playoff contention, the temptation to unleash his 150 kmph yorkers against an effective DC batting lineup led by KL Rahul is enormous.

With KKR suffering at the bottom of the standings (8th place), the signing of "Baby Malinga" is viewed as their last chance to turn the season around. Pathirana's record against top hitters like Tristan Stubbs and David Miller makes him a valuable asset if KKR decides to cover him in the final XI or use him to be a strategic impact player.
