India Women cricket team celebrating after securing LA28 Olympics qualification as ICC and IOC confirm the T20 qualification pathway for Los Angeles 2028

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) have confirmed the qualification pathway for the return of cricket to the Olympic Games at the Los Angeles 2028, with a new ICC Olympics Qualifier being set to determine the final places in both the men’s and women’s T20 events.

The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales, where Australia, West Indies, England, and South Africa qualified to the semifinal stage of the contest, produced the first four qualified teams for the women’s event of the Olympics.

How does the ICC's LA28 cricket qualification pathway work — and who has already qualified?

Six teams will compete in each event at the LA28, where the five qualification spots will be decided through the existing ICC tournaments and the T20I rankings, while the sixth and final berth will be awarded through the inaugural eight-team ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

That means the four qualified teams in the women’s game have been Australia, Great Britain (through England), India, and South AfricaThey have secured the qualification as the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia, and Africa, respectively, with the qualification being limited to one team per continent. That means, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will feature in the LA28 Olympics cricket, but it won't be the same case for Pakistan, who ranks at the eighth position as of June 30, 2026.

The hosts, United States of America, will automatically qualify for both the men’s and the women’s games, provided they remain part of the top-15 of the respective ICC T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026.

If USA women fail to meet the criterion, the additional automatic berth will go to the highest-ranked non-qualified team in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings as of March 01, 2027. In case of the men’s event, the place will be given to the next highest-ranked eligible team, who hasn’t already qualified by December 31, 2026.

The remaining automatic qualification process will be placed as per the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania in the ICC Men’s T20 rankings on December 31, 2026.

The ICC have also outlined the separate qualification path for the Caribbean side. As the West Indies represents several nations and isn’t recognized as an IOC National Olympic Committee, it can’t compete in the Olympic Games. So, in case they finish among the top eight highest-ranked non-qualified teams by that period, a Caribbean qualifying event will decide who will represent the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Cricket returns to the Olympics after 128 years — What LA28 means for the sport's global future

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games represent a massive shift in the global sports landscape and their establishment as a modern blueprint that prioritizes regional expansion and cultural relevance.

Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences. The International Cricket Council (ICC) chair, Jay Shah, said on the venue announcement.

The 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier will have eight teams in both the men’s and women’s events. Seven places will be filled by the next highest-ranked eligible teams in the respective ICC T20I rankings, apart from those who have already qualified for LA28, with the winner getting the final Olympic berth.

A total of 28 matches will be played across the men’s and women’s events at a newly-built cricket venue in Pomona. Each nation will name a 15-member squad, where six teams will be split into two groups of three, with teams playing the other sides in their group before taking on two teams from the opposite group that finished in different positions.

The top two sides will meet for the Gold medal, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will face off for the bronze medal.
