List of failures under Gautam Gambhir's coaching — Home Test losses, ODI slide, and the Ireland shock
List of the failures under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir for the Indian side, which is included of home Test losses, ODI slump and the recent shocking series defeat against Ireland.

When India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland was announced, many reckoned it would be a great practice series for the T20 World Cup 2026 winners ahead of their five-match T20I series against England. But no one predicted the team to go down with a 2-0 series defeat as questions continue to grow over the coaching of Gautam Gambhir.
Apart from winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 WC 2026 at home, Gambhir’s CV as the national head coach is filled with several failures across the three formats of the game. This includes two home Test series defeats, which, at one point in time, was impossible to achieve for any visiting side.
India made significant gains during the two-and-a-half-year period when Rahul Dravid was their head coach, making the finals of the world event in each of the three formats and winning the T20 World Cup. But with Gambhir becoming the coach, the focus had shifted towards building on those gains.
It had big shoes to fill. Just after the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the 2024 edition, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, many hoped for Gambhir to join the national side, despite him having no such domestic experience in the coaching tenure.

Gambhir’s tenure began on July 27, 2024, with India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. This was his first time as head coach of a team, although he had served as the mentor of both KKR and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL. In his playing days, he was an excellent opening batter with an international career that spanned 13 years and peaked with the two World Cup trophies in 2007 and 2011.

“My learning has been simple - it has been all about winning. I don't deviate from something. We are in a profession where there can be only one winner. We try and play fair, we try and play hard, and try and come back in a winning dressing room and a happy dressing room.” Gambhir said after becoming India’s head coach.
However, things haven’t been smooth under his coaching as the Indian side have failed on several occasions across the three formats of the game.
Two series, two home defeats — India's Test collapse under Gambhir

Since the beginning of Gambhir’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian Test team, the national side have earned only eight victories in 20 Tests at a win-loss ratio of just 0.80, which is even behind Bangladesh’s eight wins in 17 clashes at a W-L of 1.142.
Out of those eight wins for the Indian side, five came against Bangladesh, West Indies, and Afghanistan at home. Meanwhile, they lost two home series against New Zealand and South Africa, which no one ever imagined to happen in their familiar conditions.
They gained a memorable victory against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth but lost control of the series with two defeats in the next three games. Some of the decisions with their batting order and use of players raised the eyebrows.
It’s also notable that Rohit Sharma decided to step down from Test captaincy and even retire from the format before Virat Kohli took the same decision. Currently, India are in a spot of not qualifying for their second WTC final if they face any defeat in their remaining three series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia.
The ODI slide continues — Why India keep losing series both home and away under Gambhir's watch

Along with the Test captaincy change, the selectors, surely after the discussions with the head coach, decided to leave out Rohit from the ODI captaincy and handed the responsibility to Shubman Gill, who is also the red-ball skipper at the same time.
Since the beginning of Gambhir’s coaching tenure, India have won 15 games in 23 ODIs at a win-loss of 2.142. This is where he has found some success, having also earned the Champions Trophy 2025. There were several discussions where his past relations in the field with Kohli would go in a stable manner after he becomes the coach. But that hasn’t had an effect on the veteran.
Rohit is the leading ODI run-getter in Gambhir’s coaching with 1011 runs at 45.95 with seven fifties and two centuries while Kohli sits at the second position with 949 runs in 19 innings at an average of around 60, shouldering on the four centuries and five half-centuries at the best score of 135 runs.

It would remain a challenge for him to gather the side in a proper way with the right balance of youth and experience for the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
History made the wrong way — How Ireland beat India in a T20I series for the first time

The T20Is remained the most consistent format under Gambhir for India, who earned 35 runs in just 45 T20Is till the end of the T20 WC 2026, which they went on to win, despite being in a tricky situation under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav.
But what was to follow under the new captaincy of Shreyas Iyer was shocking to many. Questions would again be raised over his decisions on the team selection. But with the amount of success he has had in this format, he may turn it around ahead of the next event in 2028.
Losing to Ireland by a 2-0 margin was shocking, and that too with a strong team with most of the top-class players being available in the eleven. T20Is can be tough and get changed any time, but their batting against a team like Ireland wasn’t expected, having been the World champions on successive occasions.
Should Gautam Gambhir coach India in all three formats?

Looking at the coaching highlights, one may argue that India should look for a new coach and beyond Gambhir, but he has the success in the shortest format as a bigger prospect. However, can the BCCI think of spilt coaching across the three formats?
Having one single coach in all three formats builds consistency, helps in player development, and allows the coach to align the long-term vision of the team.

Meanwhile, different coaches bring freshness into the set-up with new plans. Many, in the history of the game, have been able to crack the red-ball, while they have failed to crack the white-ball. And that could happen with Gautam Gambhir’s coaching in the near future.
