Since their last defeat, India have become the most dominant and successful side across the three formats. While the former World Cup-winning captain, MS Dhoni, brought success in ODIs and T20Is, Virat Kohli shaped them to be at the top of Test cricket. However, amidst the joyful days, there have been a few dark chapters in India’s cricket history.

With the success and enormous growth of the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the last few editions that brought several new youngsters into the national side, India became three-time champions of the T20 World Cups, winning in two successive editions in 2024 and 2026.

The blue brigade has bagged five ICC trophies since the beginning of the 21st century. Despite their incredible record in international cricket, especially the shortest format in the last two decades, there have been instances where the Men in Blue faced some big upsets against the weaker teams.

The T20I format can be tricky. One or two superb knocks from the batters or a fine spell from a bowler or even a great catch from the fielder can easily change the progress and momentum of the side. And that has exactly been the situation with the Indian side on these few occasions, where they failed to grab the opportunity and get over the line.

It has now become an unwanted record where India have lost thrice in successive times on their very first T20I clash just after winning the T20 World Cups. In 2007, they failed to get over the line against Australia just after winning the trophy by beating Pakistan in the final.

This was followed by the same instance where they lost to Zimbabwe in 2024 under the leadership of Shubman Gill, a few days after winning the title by beating South Africa in Barbados. And the recent one was in Belfast, when the Shreyas Iyer-led side lost to Ireland, after the Suryakumar Yadav-led side won the title by beating New Zealand in the final.

Top 5 most shocking T20I defeats for India of all time

The humiliating defeats for India have made headlines on all occasions. Here is a glance at the top five most shocking T20I defeats for the blue brigade of all time-

#1 Ireland vs India, 2026 in Belfast-

At the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, India’s newly made captain, Shreyas Iyer, won the toss and decided to bowl first against Ireland. That decision turned out to be the right one at the start of the innings when the home side lost three quick wickets inside the powerplay and was reduced to 30/3 in 3.4 overs.

However, the Irish captain, Lorcan Tucker, recovered them with 50 runs off 36 balls at a strike rate of 138.89 with five boundaries and two sixes, before Gareth Delany slammed a dashing knock of 49 runs off 32 balls, thanks to three boundaries and as many sixes to finish with 182/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, the blue brigade were bundled out for just 148 runs in 18.5 overs and lost the contest by 34 runs. Despite a good start, they failed to carry on with the same momentum. Abhishek Sharma drilled 49 runs off 20 balls, while others failed to give him support.

For Ireland, Matthew Humphrey and Matthew Holland picked up three wickets each to help Ireland win their first-ever T20I contest against this opposition.

“It was pretty special. But just credit to the lads. I think we scrapped through that game. We had some tough periods, but we stayed in it. And we were diligent, and we worked hard. And we were lucky to get the reward in the end.” Tucker expressed at the end of the clash.

Brief Scores- Ireland 182/9 (Lorcan Tucker 50, Gareth Delany 49, Harshit Rana 3/24) beat India 148 (Abhishek Sharma 49, Matthew Hollard 3/28, Matthew Humphreys 3/38) by 34 runs.

#2 Zimbabwe vs India, 2024 in Harare-

India’s captain, Shubman Gill, won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which had some assistance and made it hard for the batters. The home side, under the leadership of Sikandar Raza, kept losing wickets regularly and was restricted to 115 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Brian Bennett, Dion Mayers, Clive Madane, and Wessly Madhevere were the only batters to cross the 20-run mark in the line-up. Ravi Bishnoi picked up four wickets for 13 runs in four overs at an economy rate of 3.20, while Washington Sundar had 2/11 in four overs.

The blue brigade, who were expecting to complete the chase comfortably, got rolled over for 102 runs in 19.5 overs. It was a shocking batting show from the visitors as Raza finished with figures of 3/25 in four overs while Tendai Chatara returned with 3/15 in 3.5 overs. The hosts took the series lead with the 13-run victory.

“Feel really happy about the win. Need to take one game at a time. The job is not done; the series is not over. World champions play like world champions, so we need to be ready for the next game.” The Zimbabwe captain added.

Brief Scores- Zimbabwe 115/9 (Clive Madande 29*, Ravi Bishnoi 4/13) beat India 102 (Shubman Gill 31, Tendai Chatara 3/16, Sikandar Raza 3/25) by 13 runs.

#3 India vs Bangladesh, 2019 in Delhi-

Bangladesh and India have faced each other in 14 T20I clashes, with the only victory for the latter against the blue brigade coming in 2019 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The Rohit Sharma-led side batted first to post a decent score of 148 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Most of their batters struggled to get going, with the veteran opener, Shikhar Dhawan, collecting only 41 runs off 42 balls. It was the small 28-run stand off 10 balls between Krunal Pandya and Sundar that shouldered them to that score.

The visitors, despite losing an early wicket, held their nerve and completed the successful chase by seven wickets with three balls to spare. Their wicket-keeper batter, Mushfiqur Rahim, remained unbeaten on 60 runs off 43 balls with the help of eight boundaries and one six.

“I think it was all based on how we started. The bowlers did a great job; everyone chipped in. I think we fielded really well and that gave us momentum going into our batting.” The Bangladesh captain, Mahmudullah, said after their victory.

Brief Scores- Bangladesh 154/3 (Mushfiqur Rahim 60*, Yuzvendra Chahal 1/24) beat India 148/6 (Shikhar Dhawan 41, Aminul Islam 2/22) by 7 wickets.

#4 Zimbabwe vs India, 2016 in Harare-

It was the opening T20I of the three-match series between Zimbabwe and India in 2016, where the hosts batted first and posted a strong score of 170 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Their captain, Elton Chigumbura, bashed a fine knock of unbeaten 54 runs off just 26 balls, thanks to seven sixes and one boundary.

It was also a new-looking Indian side, where most of the senior players were resting with a long home season ahead. Jasprit Bumrah was part of the series and ended with 2/24 in that clash in his four overs.

The hosts batted first and got 145 runs in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets as Chamu Chibhabha smashed 67 runs off 51 balls with the help of nine boundaries.

That remains their biggest-ever defeat in terms of runs in the shortest format as of June 2026. They were also blown away by England with a 10-wicket defeat during the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinals at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
