The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made some major changes to reveal their 15-member squads for the one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan at home after the end of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Gurnoor Brar has been selected in both squads.

Their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, has been given a much-needed break from the entire series as KL Rahul has replaced Risabh Pant as their new vice-captain. The fixture is the first time they are playing the red-ball games since the 2-0 defeat to South Africa at home last November.

Apart from Bumrah, the other notable omissions from the squad are the left-arm spin all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, along with the fast bowler, Akash Deep. Jadeja has been given time off in the lone Test while the selectors aim for different options in the 50-over games, keeping an eye on the ODI World Cup 2027.

Meanwhile, Manav Suthar and fast bowler Gurnoor Brar have got their maiden call-ups to the Test squad, while the left-arm spinner, Harsh Dubey, has also been rewarded.

Prince Yadav and Brar have got their maiden call-ups in the ODI squad for the three-match series against the Asian side. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya have made their comebacks, while Harshit Rana misses out after being absent from the entire IPL 2026 due to a knee surgery.

Gurnoor Brar is the surprise element of the squad as the 25-year-old has 52 wickets in 28 FC innings and 12 wickets in nine innings of the domestic 50-over clashes.

Devdutt Padikkal has also made the cut in the Indian Test side after a strong Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season. He could be India’s new Test number three, replacing Sai Sudharsan, who is in the squad.
