Rishabh Pant wasn’t up to the mark in terms of his tactics during the clash between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, after he asked the home side to bat on a solid surface.

The second-wicket stand of Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly took the Lucknow bowlers for a toll as the ball traveled to all the corners of the park. Once they smashed Ayush Badoni for a four and six to start the second phase after the powerplay, they didn’t lose the momentum for the next 14 overs.

It was another wrong decision from Pant to use Aiden Markram during the 13th over of the innings against both the set batters. The first delivery was flatter just outside the off stump as Connolly lofted it over the cover region for a proper six.

Markram tried to bowl into the wicket and was actually able to rush the batter a bit. But Connolly managed to pull the short ball and sent it over the long-on region despite that being a mishit. The batter backed away with the bowler following it, but he couldn’t stop him.

On the third delivery, the South African spinner went to the blockhole. But he missed the length by a whisker, and it was enough for the southpaw to belt it hard over the sightscreen for a massive six.

For the last two balls, the onus was on Arya, who showed his ability. The fifth ball was on the pads as the Punjab opener crunched it over the deep mid-wicket fielder, who jumped but couldn’t get the ball inside the field. The over ended with another six as they claimed 32 runs off the single over to get applause from the entire crowd.

PBKS breaks record with powerful score of 254/7

Arya and Cooper Connolly posted a massive stand of 182 runs off just 80 balls, which was the base for them to put up a massive score of 254/6 against the LSG side. This became their second-highest team score in the league, after 262/2 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. They hit 21 sixes this evening.

Lucknow made a decent start in the massive chase by reaching 44/0 in four overs as Ayush Badoni took the onslaught with 23* off 12 balls. It was still going to be a tough ask for the visiting side.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): LSG 55/0 (Ayush Badoni 30*) vs PBKS 254/7 (Priyansh Arya 93, Cooper Connolly 87, Prince Yadav 2/25)
