Essex's Robin Das charged with two counts of rape: What we know

The Bangladesh-origin Essex player, Robin Das, has been charged with two counts of rape and will be present at the Inner London Crown Court on October 9. The 24-year-old was arrested on August 27 last year, following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton in March this year.

Robin’s last competitive game came on July 21 this year against Middlesex in Redlett when he smashed a knock of 29 runs off 25 balls at a strike rate of 116, shouldering on his six boundaries. However, they went on to lose the contest by 41 runs, getting bundled out for 253 in the chase.

Robin Das was born in Leytonstone and played for the Dhaka Dominators in the past before moving to England, where he made his new base in Essex. In nine first-class games for the side, he has smashed 327 runs at an average of 25.15 and a strike rate of around 60, with one century in his name.

Robin featured in 29 innings of List A cricket and collected 805 runs at an average of 28.75 with a strike rate of 90, shouldering on his five centuries and one half-century at the best score of undefeated 100 runs.

In the 22 innings of the T20s, the right-handed batter bagged 341 runs at an average of around 18 and a blistering strike rate of nearly 151, thanks to his couple of half-centuries.

Robin was charged on July 23, two days after his only first-team appearance of the season in the One Day Cup, as Essex confirmed that he has been suspended.

“The charges follow his arrest on 27 August 2025 following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton on 30 March 2024. The woman continues to be supported by specialist officers.” The Metropolitan Police expressed this in a statement.

Essex Cricket added that they remained in full contact with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), PCA, and the cricket regulator and the player about the matter.

“Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities.” Essex Cricket expressed.

“Throughout, the club has remained in contact with the ECB, PCA, the Cricket Regulator and the player about the matter, which included an immediate and ongoing suspension. The club will continue to follow all appropriate legal processes and guidance.” They stated.

The board has also reflected on not making any further comment at this time as the legal proceedings are in progress.

“As a club, we have strict safeguarding and HR procedures in place, and all employees of Essex County Cricket Club are required to meet the highest standards of professional conduct at all times. As legal proceedings are in progress, the club is unable to make any further comment at this time.” The statement concluded.
