Rohit Sharma looks up dejected after his dismissal during the ENG vs IND 2nd ODI

The former captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, has gone through a string of low scores in the first couple of ODIs of the three-match series against England. In the opening game at Edgbaston, he scored 11 runs, while in the second encounter, he was dismissed for a struggling knock of 26 runs in 47 balls.

Ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors have been thinking of different options, and that could push Rohit to take his retirement from the 50-over format.

String of poor scores: Rohit's form slump continues in the ENG vs IND 2nd ODI

The Indian Express has reported that BCCI’s senior selection committee has informed him that they have decided to move on from Rohit post the series. The selection committee is learnt to have spoken to Sharma alongside the coach, Gautam Gambhir, last week and have laid down the plans going forward.

Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future.

The Nagpur-born wasn’t happy with the decision of the BCCI. He has already retired from the T20Is, stepping away on June 29, 2024, after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, beating South Africa in the final. Via Instagram, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket after losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2025-26.

The big question: Should Rohit Sharma retire from ODIs despite 650 runs in 14 innings?

In the last 14 ODI innings for India, Rohit has smashed 650 runs at an average of 45.33 with the help of five 50+ scores, including one unbeaten knock of 121 runs off 125 balls. He has done well without a doubt in the last few innings of the 50-over format, but he hasn’t been able to put up a strong score in the last five games.

The issue for the veteran batter has been his lack of aggression with the bat inside the first 10 overs of the innings, which he hasn’t been able to do in the recent games of the format.
