Pakistan opener Saim Ayub, released from the ODI tri-series squad as Sahibzada Farhan is named his replacement

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that opening batter Saim Ayub has been released from Pakistan’s ODI squad for the remainder of the ongoing tri-series. Ayub requested to return to domestic cricket to work on his batting form and regain confidence after a difficult run in the series.

After discussing the matter with the head coach, Ayub expressed his desire to step away from international cricket for the time being. The team management and the national selection committee respected his decision and mutually agreed to accept his request. Ayub has struggled in the ongoing series, scoring three consecutive single-digit totals in his three matches.

Following his exit, the national selection committee has named Sahibzada Farhan as Ayub’s replacement for the remaining matches of the tri-series. Farhan will join the squad as Pakistan look to strengthen their batting options for the rest of the competition against England and Sri Lanka.

Saim Ayub has been released from Pakistan’s ODI squad after struggling with the bat in the ongoing tri-series. Pakistan have already qualified for the final with three consecutive wins and will face Sri Lanka in the fifth match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ayub requested to return to domestic cricket to improve his batting and regain confidence. Ayub scored just 21 runs in three matches in the tri-series, continuing his poor batting form in 2026. He has averaged only 16.55 in 19 appearances for Pakistan across all three formats this year. His only score of more than 50 runs came against Australia in February, ahead of the T20 World Cup. These struggles have led him to return to domestic cricket to work on his game and rebuild his confidence.

Sahibzada Farhan returns: What the new opener brings to Pakistan’s ODI side

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Sahibzada Farhan as Saim Ayub’s replacement for the remainder of the ongoing ODI tri-series. In its statement, the PCB said, “Respecting Saim’s decision and appreciating his honest assessment of his current form, the team management and national selection committee have mutually agreed to accept this request.” The board also confirmed that Farhan would take Ayub’s place in the squad.

His inclusion gives Pakistan another batting option for the remaining matches. He will now have an opportunity to contribute as the team prepares for the final stages of the competition.
