On a late call-up from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026, Saim Ayub, who hasn’t played any first-class cricket recently, bagged a pair during the third Test of the series against England at Edgbaston. The Pakistan opener was dismissed on a first-ball duck during the second innings of the encounter.

That was the third zero-run opening partnership for Pakistan in this series, while the three other scores were of five, seven, and eight runs, which never allowed them to get a strong start with the bat. Their batting has been the biggest reason for their struggle in this series against England.

How Saim Ayub fell for a first-ball duck — Full breakdown of the dismissal

In the first innings of the game, Saim Ayub was trapped leg before the stumps on the bowling of Ollie Robinson for a 10-ball duck. It was a length ball slanting in from round the wicket, beating the southpaw’s inside edge on the push to rap him on the back leg. The UltraEdge confirmed that there was no bat.

The ball tracking also showed that it would have gone on to hit the leg stump of the batter. That was also a special occasion for Robinson, who claimed his 100th wicket in the five-day format for the England side.

In the second innings, Robinson opened the attack and went with a full delivery outside the off-stump. Ayub, short of runs and confidence, went for an expensive drive as the outside edge flew into the hands of the second slip, who grabbed it to his right with both hands.

Pakistan made another nightmarish start to their last innings of the tour, as Robinson celebrated the wicket of Ayub. Three balls later, they lost Abdullah Shafique for a three-ball duck.

Pakistan's batting struggles continue in the 3rd Test vs England

Pakistan were bundled out for 133 runs in the first innings as their highest individual score was 43 runs by Saud Shakeel, with the help of seven boundaries at a strike rate of 91.49. Josh Tongue returned with figures of 4/42, while Jofra Archer and Ollie Robinson ended with three wickets each.

England were bundled out for 453 runs in their first innings, thanks to five half-centuries in the department from Emilio Gay, Harry Brook, Dan Lawrence, Jamie Smith, and Robinson. Razaullah, on debut, finished with four wickets.

The second day ended with Pakistan being 52/2 in 12.4 overs, trailing by 268 runs. Azan Awais remained unbeaten on 29 runs off 30 balls as they returned to the dressing room.
