Just when Jordan Cox looked set for a huge score, his name after celebrating his fifty during the second Test of the three-match series between England and Pakistan at Lord’s, Pakistan sent him back with Salman Agha grabbing a superb one-handed catch in the slip region.

Pakistan came into this contest on the back of their defeat inside three days during the opening game at Leeds when their batting folded like a pack of cards. However, for this contest, Babar Azam returned to the playing XI to strengthen the mood of the side.

On the first delivery of the 48th over of the innings, Khurram Shahzad went with a fuller-length delivery to Cox, who went for a massive drive and ended up getting an outside edge. It was a seam-up delivery and landed on the seam to nip enough to take the edge.

Agha was active and dived to his right in the air to grab the fine one-handed catch. He flew to his right, plucked it out of thin air, and sat down before putting a smile on his face as he was mobbed by his teammates. Babar was near him and couldn’t believe it at all.

The entire Pakistan side went to Agha and congratulated him for the catch. He had been left out of the eleven for this contest and came to the field as a substitute.

Cox's 55 ends — How England were placed on Day 1 of the Lord's Test when the catch struck

Just a few overs after Cox’s dismissal on 55 runs, Mohammad Ali broke the stumps of Jamie Smith, who made his way back into the pavilion for 61 runs. It was on a fuller-length ball outside the off stump, pitched in and nipped, while Smith, trying to play an expansive drive through mid-off, left a gap between bat and pad and saw the ball break the stumps.

A couple of balls later, it was the same fate for Ollie Robinson, who was dismissed on a second-ball duck as he leaned ahead tentatively to counter but played down the wrong line.

Mohammad Abbas, who picked up three wickets at the start of the game after opting to bowl first, sent back Jofra Archer for 14 runs. He swung his bat and missed the ball, only to see the stumps get broken. England made their way to 248/9 after the end of the first day.

Brief Scores: England 248/9 (Jamie Smith 61, Jordan Cox 55, Mohammad Abbas 4/56) vs Pakistan.
