Shreyas Iyer emerges as frontrunner to become India’s next T20I captain: Reports

Shreyas Iyer emerges as a leading candidate for India’s next T20I captaincy role, as per reports amid ongoing leadership discussions.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer has gained massive appreciation from fans and management alike, thanks to his incredible performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. PBKS are in the top position with four consecutive wins in the tournament. This speaks volumes about Iyer's captaincy.

He also scored 66 runs against the Mumbai Indians (MI) and helped PBKS win the match. In the previous season, he was the man behind their qualification and playing the finals as well. Hence, it will be intriguing to see Iyer's transition from being a player to the T20I captain in the T20I setup, considering his performance and captaincy skills.

Selection panel considering leadership change in T20I setup

The BCCI selectors are considering Shreyas Iyer for the T20I captaincy role after his marvellous performance in the IPL 2026. While the transition might take time, BCCI's source has mentioned that the selectors might have a plan for the leadership role in the T20Is.

“Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It’s a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway. The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition,” a BCCI source said to Times of India.

Why Shreyas Iyer is leading the race for captaincy role

Iyer’s rise in the leadership race is not without reason. The right-hander has built a reputation as a calm and composed figure on the field, capable of handling pressure situations effectively. His experience of captaining in the IPL has also added weight to his credentials, where he has shown the ability to manage players and make tactical decisions.

Apart from leadership skills, Iyer’s consistency with the bat in the middle order makes him a reliable presence in the T20I setup. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav's performance from the past two years has dropped, and that has pushed him under scrutiny despite winning the T20 World Cup 2026. Hence, the selectors are likely valuing not just Iyer's cricketing ability, but also his temperament and communication skills, which are key traits for a modern-day captain. His understanding of game situations and ability to adapt quickly have further strengthened his case.

What this means for India’s future in T20 internationals

If Iyer is eventually handed the captaincy, it could signal a shift towards a more stable and long-term vision for India’s T20 side. A settled captain who is in form would allow the team to build a clear strategy, develop a core group of players, and maintain consistency in selection.

It could also mark the beginning of a new phase where India focuses on balancing youth and experience, while adopting a more flexible and aggressive approach in the shortest format. With major ICC events on the horizon, a defined leadership structure could play a crucial role in shaping India’s success going forward.
