England face Sri Lanka in Match 42 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, February 22. After winning three out of four matches in Group C, England progressed to the next round as runners-up. They faced Nepal and won that match in a very close contest, having been ahead by 4 runs as the last batter was runout. England then lost their next match against West Indies, which was by a sizeable margin of 30 runs. England then went on to beat both Scotland and Italy convincingly. The main reasons for England's comeback after losing to West Indies were quality deep batting and consistent disciplined bowling performance throughout the group phase of the tournament to comfortably qualify for the Super Eights.
In the same way that England progressed from Group C, Sri Lanka finished in first place in Group B with three wins and one loss. Sri Lanka opened with a 20 run victory over Ireland and subsequently defeated Oman by 105 runs. Sri Lanka's most impressive display of the tournament occurred in their second match against Australia, where they chased down a target of 181 runs with eight wickets to spare. Although Sri Lanka struggled against Zimbabwe, overall they scored over 750 runs and are looking to continue this trend into the knockout phase. Because of this form and the fact they will have gained plenty of confidence throughout the group stage, Sri Lanka could be one of the leading contenders for the title if they continue to put in a similarly consistent performance through the knockout phase.
